Overall good game with the caveat that it makes me quickly understand why Redengine was trashed for Unreal Engine by CDProjektRed, which is probably the best decision they ever made. Too many games have died due to studios developing and trying to maintain their proprietary engines when the games should have been developed on a licensed engine instead (Looking at you, Anthem). This game suffers from many of the complications that carried over to make Cyberpunk2077 the failure it was.

Pros:

- Based on a deep and fleshed out IP story line developed by a bona fide literary artist Andrzej Sapkowski, published in print years prior to becoming a video game and not written by angry feminists trying to rebound from a failed journalist career and using videogames as a pLaTfOrM fOR jUsTiCe. So lots of content pre-imagined that does not have to be created. Sorry Zoomers and Millennials but you can no longer be trusted with independent creativity.
- Tons of content and side quests, some of which is in fact written by angry feminists but at least it has little impact on overall cannon.
- Lots of flexibility on weapons, gear, loadouts, and play styles.
- Zones and factions have their own personality and feel.
- While some monsters are reskinned copypastas, the sheer amount of different foes allows this to be a forgivable sin. The bestiary list and separate character list is something I ignore in many games but find myself re-referencing in this one due to game mechanics. This is good design choice.
- I spent almost as much time looking for and playing NPCs in Gwent than I do playing the game. I've never seen a mini-game adapted and integrated into a game as well as this before.

* EXPANSIONS:

- Hearts of Stone expansion has some of the best writing and story telling I've seen in a videogame since Drew Karpyshyn's writing in Mass Effect, and it's significantly better than the main game's writing. I am not sure if this was someone's pet project, but there is a marked increase in quality and depth of story as far as quest design is concerned. It's based on a Polish folktale from Pan Twardowski, which is in itself based on a common 'crossroads demon' type of story found in many disparate cultures. The writing in the notes and books you pick up is captivating and easy to miss, don't overlook it. The story of what the antagonist O'Dimm did to Professor Shakeslock in his dreams is wild and sadistic and you only really learn of it through reading Shakeslock's notes that you loot. I also enjoyed the telling of Iris von Everc's tale too so I spent a lot of time at the mansion forensically learning about her admittedly tragic tale.

- Still mid-way through Blood and Wine, but it looks good so far, with more Gwent to play as well. Will update when done.

Cons:

-The vehicle mechanics are atrocious, which is a commonality with Cyberpunk, so I blame redengine here. Know your place, trash.
-Character movement is frustrating most of the time. I die more to getting stuck underwater or falling off ledges than I do to mobs.
-Want to get on a boat from a dock? Sorry no, jump in the water first and pull yourself up, nerd.
-Want to summon your horse? Sorry the horse spawns 50 yards away and behind a 2 foot fence he cant jump over. Go ahead and run 100 yards on foot and try again loser.
-On a cliff and want to turn around? Nope, haha, Geralt runs forward two steps before turning, falling to his death.
-Fall damage: 5 feet = roll like a stud and keep running. 6 feet = instant death. No in between. There are many such cases, making you understand why the devs implemented such frequent checkpoints.
-I make frequent trips to the barber because the game randomly changes Geralt's hair and beard.
-Sometimes in combat I wonder why I am getting dunked on and realize the game just randomly swapped out my gear from my green set to grey or blue garbage gear for no reason at all.
-Caged mouse limits y-axis view in most all situations, a pet peeve of mine. Stop it.
-Sometimes button presses just fail to register, or movement gets super wonky for no reason. A quick save and load fixes this.

Many of these cons are unforgivable basic bugs that are sussed out and fixed no later than alpha or beta stages, and yet they continue to exist 7 years after the release date. Still worth it for the story though.
