Great game.
Now I am by no means a hardcore card game player, and I haven't played Hearthstone. But after I was hooked by the simplistic low-poly style of Stormbound, I became addicted to the gameplay itself. The game features four tribes, all with two species of soldiers, plus a neutral array of warriors available for all the tribes. Adding to that is the new Dragon update, after which the game yields a dazzling collection of play styles and strategies.
Of course the first thing you notice is how Stormbound creatively combines chess and card. This indeed makes the game very fun, and it certainly enhances the strategic element. The priority for attack when surrounded by enemy units makes setting up certain battle formation effective. How the grids interact and affect each other is worth thinking about, and the game rewards thinking.
I had been playing mainly on my phone, which is a very good experience. There was a time when I accidentally uninstalled my game and lost my record because the data was stored locally, but I reached out to the devs, who was able to restore my data. I am grateful. Now progress syncs across platforms with the Kongregate account, so be assured that this would not be happening again.

Now, the pay-2-win thing.

Yes, you need to collect cards, and some of the cards people have just allow them to be more powerful. Yes, you can upgrade your cards, which means that that same TALENTED RECRUIT card your opponent has could have 2 more units than yours do. BUT, be aware that while paying do accelerate your leveling up, cards and upgrades can be purchased with in-game coins, which are not terribly hard to obtain. I have not paid ANYTHING playing this game, but I clearly can and did win. Also, even though I have encountered players with bases that have 2-4 more HPs than mine does, I haven't met anyone beyond that. There's clearly a limit as to how much the two players can differ in their power. Btw I just defeated 2 players with 14-HP bases before I wrote this review (I have 12).
I just got back into the game after a few months (during which I had login issues), and Stormbound now features a league system. I rose into the Silver league with some effort, but honestly I doubt I will get beyond Silver. I believe Stormbound isn't P2W, but I do believe that if you want to become a top player, you do need to pay (or playing for free for eternity).
I have recommended the game to people around me but none of them sticked with it unfortunately. Several of them were card game (aka Hearthstone) players, and they were not a fan of the upgrade system either. But for me personally, I think the system is a reward for player who have gotten past the initial stage and gained experience (or, well, paid).

PRO
-Great graphics
-Creative gameplay and strategy
-Great backstory and setting
-Much replayability

CON
-A bit unfair for new players?
-Upgrade system creating advantages
-Need to get good (or pay) to enjoy

I suggest anyone who has an interest to stick with the game for a while, like at least a few days, and focus on building their deck and strategy. Then see if you like the game. DON'T JUST OVERLOOK IT JUST BECAUSE OF THE REVIEW

9+/10

P.S.:
My game ID is 1001991295, you're welcome to come play.
Also, I have not been able to log in with the Steam edition. I'm not glad.
