At only a little over two hours in I was getting the exact same vibes I got playing New Vegas at launch. This is the greatest 40K video game ever made.

The game we've all always wanted but no one actually made until now. Genuinely groundbreaking and addictive gameplay to nearly rival the Civ formula. Incredible storytelling game. You are basically presented with a completely dynamic generic fantasy setting with mechanics in place to simulate both individuals and human/wood elf dynasties in ways that rival CK2, and then given thematic tools to destroy the world generated specifically for you in a myriad of ways (flooding the land with corrupting and numbing darkness ala Demon's Souls, destroying farming villages and watching castles and cities starve to death as mass riots begin to break out, murdering heroes and benevolent rulers who prove immune to corruption, spreading disease, manipulating royal families into wars and vendettas, summoning undead in the aftermath of the death caused by aforementioned disease and wars, using powerful magic to render the very environment uninhabitable by life, carefully and subtly manipulating unruly Orc hordes into genuine threats to civilization, subverting religions and witch covens to your own designs: if you can think of it and it fits the theme of the game, it's probably mechanically represented, somewhere, somehow, in some way,) with the key to victory being to play the extremely long game with subtle pawns that have hard coded mechanics that allow you to potentially use deliberately more overt targets as distractions from their low key subterfuges ala Sindri Myr. If you are even remotely interested, there is a free demo that lets you play through the tutorials and a significant amount of playtime with the dark god designed for new players. You will know immediately if it is your thing or not. If so, and if you have the expendable income, please buy the game even if it isn't on a Steam sale, the single dev that created this deserves the money.

Do not buy this for the third game. Buy either the equivalent for the second game, or the equivalent for the first game. It costs less, and buying just one gives you access to the other two, for free.

As of the release of the DLC Champions of Chaos I can no longer recommend new players buy this game, even with the use of mods. The developers have adopted the same monetization scheme as Paradox Interactive, where wholly revamped core mechanics of factions are locked behind additional paywalls than the price for the base game, the specific example in this case being literal DLC for DLC. If you're a new player, and looking to jump in, wait until all of the DLC is out, and the game's official development has been finished.

Active and communicative developers. Like Mafia or Werewolf, but themed around birds.
