I am a long-time PC gamer, single player games mostly. I prefer thoughtful games to twitchy ones and I adore good graphics.

Gameplay is king, though - I'll take a great game that looks crap over a beautiful but empty one any day.

I love old-school isometric RPGs, turn-based games, and first-person shooters. Love me the occasional action game too, plus whatever category Fallout 3 & 4 fall in to.

Got this in the July Humble Choice bundle, and I am loving it! It's the most fun I've had in a single-player FPS in a long time - it's dark and gritty, difficult in places, and the story is forgettable, but the gunplay and skills are so satisfying to unleash that I don't care why I am murder-machining my way through the game. Plus it's Warhammer, and Warhammer is badass.

I think it's the structure of the gameplay that has me enjoying it so much. There are main missions to complete, of course, but after the 2nd one is done side missions open up. These offer ways to earn more money with which to upgrade my skills and abilities, which in turn make completing main missions just that much easier. They're awesome, too, because they're quick and fun, the rewards are good, and they've allowed me to unlock things like greater rewards for completing side missions and improvements to my abilities.

And using abilities is very important in this game, because having decent FPS skills alone has not been enough to keep me alive. The improvements in my combat abilities are tangible, too, and it's really nice to go from struggling to take down certain foes (♥♥♥♥ those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with energy shields) to being able to chew through them after disabling their shields with an upgraded Haywire Pulse. Being able to slow down time for longer has likewise proved incredibly helpful.

The guns themselves are also satisfying to use, largely due to excellent sound design and damage upgrade variations that offer decent spectacle (fire damage on a fast-firing shotgun looks SO cool!), and Hired Gun encourages using them as much as possible. For example, it takes a leaf from DOOM's book by giving you a skill that lets you heal by shooting enemies in a small time window after taking damage, so you're incentivised to keep moving and shooting as much as possible. Traversal is pretty sweet as well, with wall-running, sliding, double jumps and dodges to make getting around the huge environments a lot of fun.

I am also only playing now, with the game patched and stable like it apparently wasn't at launch, so I'm seeing it at its best. After playing for 12 hours or so, I can definitely say that if you've been thinking about getting it but you've been on the fence, you should totally grab it. At the time of writing it's on sale, so it's a great time to dive in.

I am only on the 4th story mission as of this review (I've been farming cash for upgrades via the side missions), so maybe it gets worse in the future, but for now I am very happy with my purchase. I'm enjoying myself so much, in fact, that I am considering grabbing other Warhammer titles that I've had my eye on (Underhive Wars in particular), in the hope that they have also been improved by patches in the time since release.

So sorry the game was so buggy at launch. It's really good! Also, it makes for some incredible screenshots!
