I wish they made Shipwrecked and Hamlet multiplayer too. I get it that singleplayer versions would become obsolete, but it's not about the games itself, it's about the fun players have and how much it would skyrocket if you could play with friends.
Just my opinion, though.

DST is very unfriendly towards new players. A lot of information to process and pretty much every new thing you learn must be paid with a death. And without mods you basically must start anew every time.

Without its wikipedia one would need several months to learn what every character does and every single one's weaknesses. It really burns you out if you die at every blind step, to something the game doesn't even attempt explaining.

But fear not! Mods are here to help! There are a lot of mods that make the game very very very enjoyable! Especially with friends that is. It's a difficult game, but there is a lot of content and a lot of places to explore, build around, plan around and a lot of things you GOTTA RUN FROM AAAAAAHHHH.

With a bit of mod help you can turn deaths into simple consequences and not game overs.
Play a run, with or without friends, with said failsafes. Explore first, challenge yourself later.

Its artstyle is very unique and simple. I can't get enough of it. The game is constantly updated and kept in shape. There is no reason not to give this game a try. At first there will be many inconveniences, but explore and also look up mods after a few playthroughs. Everyone has a rough beginning, a flaw I'd say, but as mentioned before, it is worth it.

Be persistent and don't forget to light up a bit during the night. Charlie will be onto you.
