Frequently Asked Questions (Noone actually cares, but I'll tell you anyways):
Q: Why do you have 4+ hours in most games you own?
A: Because I use(d) idle programs to farm trading cards.

Q: Can I add you with my private profile?
A: No, not really, I despise private profiles since I've mostly had negative experiences with them in the past. Try commenting with a really good reason before you do though, I might just accept.

Q: Where does the name "Beggar Soldier" come from?
A: The idea originated from Genowhirl's TF2 'OC' at the time called "New Weapons Soldier" and I thought to myself at one point... why not take up that persona and make it somewhat my own? It was an interesting era for me for sure and I enjoyed it up until the point of losing my first and last TF2 unusual that I stupidly lost. After the scam incident, I gave up on the whole idea and moved on. The name Beggar Soldier came to me because of two ideas. One as New Weapons Soldier was always begging for more new weapons to come to TF2. The second idea was, well the feeling of being broke at the time. Even after all this, the name Beggar Soldier kinda grew on me and I chose to pretty much stick with it ever since. Yeah, that's pretty much it.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is ATLUS' brand new IP that went through development hell in the past decade, however when it finally released in late 2024, it became ATLUS' fastest selling game to date and for good reasons. Briefly, the story follows the United Kingdom of Euchronia that is slowly descending into chaos after the assassination of the king that leads to anxiety constantly growing among the people as the race for the throne begins.

"With all my heart, I hope that fantasy gives you strength."

Pros:
  • The Opening Prelude to a Heroic Tale beautifully portrays the core theme of the main narrative. It shows a fantasy novel, which is based on our "utopistic" reality, but it is only just a dream for the people of the Euchronia, as they face nothing but systemic racism, oppression and inequality.
  • The story keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole narrative, I personally felt that the it just gradually got better and better leaing up to its climax.
  • The worldbuilding is so great, that it felt like playing 5 consecutive games, ATLUS really breathed life into this world.
  • Even though the game can look quite dated visually at times, the art direction is so good that you will just grow to love it eventually. From the menu designs to all the various places you will get to visit throughout the game. Truly gorgeous.
  • The way the characters are designed and written is absolute masterclass. I just loved their designs throughout and their interactions felt genuine. Not one of them were one-dimensional and they all had their own struggles to overcome and with newfound strength, reach for their ambitions and dreams.
  • The soundtrack... oh man the soundtrack, it is so good and I would say it is one of the strongest aspect of the game. Shoji Meguro blessed us yet again with music we don't deserve they are that good.
  • There is an option to play the game with either the original Japanese dub or the English dub. I personally played the game with the Japanese dub and the voice acting was phenomenal.
  • The game is absolutely packed with content. I personally played the whole game on Hard difficulty, which may have lengthened my playtime a bit, but apart from that there are so many things to do throughout Euchronia such as clearing out dungeons, run errands, explore cities and towns and getting to know new people with their own ambitions and even anxieties.
  • Combat is quite innovative for a JRPG title, since it mixes real time combat with turn based combat, or as it is called in the game "Squad Combat". So if your party is on par or a bit higher in level compared to an enemy, they can be slain in real-time, but even if they are not, you can stun them in real-time and then initiate squad combat with an advantage. It has to be noted however, that if you mess up during real-time and you get hit by an enemy, they gain the advantage and hit you first and it can be very punishing, so dodge wisely. The turn based combat uses the Press Turn system, which is akin to Shin Megami Tensei's combat rather than Persona's One More system.
  • The game inherited the calendar system from the Persona games, so there is emphasis put on how you spend your in-game days. You can do activities such as meeting new people, go on errands, explore cities and towns, maybe take up on a bounty and clear out a dungeon along the way then reap the rewards or just take a breather and take in the city sights. There are much to be done and don't worry, the game is quite generous in giving you enough days so that you are able to do everything you would want.
  • Archetypes are like the personas of Metaphor, they act rather similar as well, but you have to be strategic about how your party utilizes them, especially on harder difficulties. The way they are unlocked is different, as they are unlocked by forging and nurturing bonds and with an additional currency called MAG, rather than fusing them like in Persona. Each archetype can also inherit skills from other archetypes as long as they have been learnt by the party member.
  • YOU CAN RIDE YOUR SWORD!!!
  • Multiple Endings
  • Steam Achievements, Trading Cards etc.

Neutral:
  • The early game can be way too punishing on Hard difficulty, especially if it is your first time with the Press Turn combat system as the enemy gets an additional turn on Hard difficulty. You can always change the difficulty if you feel the need to and there is no achievement tied to it either. Some might just shrug it off and say skill issue lol.
  • Sometimes the game can feel quite stretched out, especially when it gives you like 30 in-game days before the next major plotpoint, but since you need to gear up, gather strength and prepare for the next big obstacle in the journey, I think it's fine.
  • Some shops sell items in dialogue form, meaning you would have to repeat the same interaction numerous times if you want to get something specific.

Cons:
  • Just a few complaints about some technicalities. Unfortunately, there are some textures that are really low quality. The anti-aliasing is also really horrible and sometimes the performance can tank quite a bit, but that's more than likely due to me using a higher resolution scale for better clarity. (Read my tips below on how to mitigate these issues)

Tips:
  • The protagonist's canon name is Will.
  • The game is currently getting its Manga Adaptation[mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp], which you can read for free.
  • There is a mod called "MetaphorFix", which I recommend due to the QoL features it provides, such as being able to adjust the FOV, force high quality textures where possible, remove the FPS cap in menus and so on. It is also quite customizeable within its config file and I advise tweaking it to your liking.
  • I have made a comprehensive guide on Metaphor: ReFantazio's Anti-Aliasing! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3580133616

10/10 Metaphor: ReFantazio is my personal 2024 GOTY and I do believe that it was robbed of that title, because the amount of passion put into this game is inexplicably huge. ATLUS created a whole new world and breathed life into it while also carrying an immensely important message to society, but also about how we are able to gain strength from fantasy/escapism itself. This is fantasy perfected.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this masterpiece of a game and if you are intrigued by the game itself, I really recommend trying out the game's generously lengthy Prologue Demo and then decide if the game is for you or not. If you decide to get the game after the Demo, your progress carries over. It's a no brainer and I guarantee that if you like JRPGs and an amazing storyline, you will grow to adore this.

The awards that Metaphor: Refantazio won and fully deserved:.
  • Best Narrative (TGA 2024)
  • Best Art Direction (TGA 2024)
  • Best Role Playing Game (TGA 2024)
  • Game of the Year (Japan Game Awards 2025)
