Quick gamer knowledge drop: In Sea of Thieves, you're not actually playing as Thieves, you're playing as Pirates performing a little something known as Piracy which is against the law you know. Whilst it was commonly mistaken that Thieves were Pirates and Pirates were Thieves, to be a Thief you need to only commit one crime whilst attempting to avoid all others, whereas being a Pirate affords you a broader range of misdeeds and misconduct against both civilised and non-civilised personnel provided it is taking place upon a body of water and you are using a mighty vessel.

For example, during the Metal Ages, being a Thief was most difficult if you wanted to challenge yourself, you weren't even allowed to kill a Guard, but if you were a Pirate in the era prior, you would be allowed to do whatever it takes to secure the bag.
