I think the story and characters in the game are pretty good! Definitely among the best in the series! And that’s not even the reason why the game has mixed reviews.
I think there are two main reasons why the game hasn’t been well treated. One is the animations, which haven’t improved at all in 10 years in fact, sometimes they even feel like a step backward compared to Until Dawn.
The other is the forced stealth sequences, which turned out to be incredibly primitive. If there were only half as many of them, it wouldn’t be a problem, but they make up about half of the game.

Despite that, I’m still leaving a positive review! This game is very different compared to the others, and it has some really good ideas! I liked being able to follow the events through a tree system (Detroit feeling). And as I said, the story and the characters are really good! Finally, we also have the chance to save the non-playable characters! I really liked that too!

But if they can’t improve the animations and find a middle ground between gameplay and story (which honestly should be standard after this many games and years of experience), I’m afraid the Dark Pictures series doesn’t have a very bright future.
