Should definitely be played in coop.
It can be played alone, but handling two characters at once makes it annoying. Sometimes the cpu-controlled companion will jump to his death - if you time jumping onto moving platforms right/wrong.

Not sure if I want to recommend or not.
With the right coop partner, I can definitely imagine this being enjoyable.
