Media before video games ask us to emphasise with the hero, and games ask us to take up the swords ourselves. They take us, the player, right into the centre. One therefore has to wonder what happens when you take a regular mundane fantasy and throw them right into the middle of the game. Without the player there is no game, so we take our regular mundane selves and place it into the actual fantasy, if only for a short while. This immersive mental cross-over is called transficitonal empathy. Persona 4 Golden is the absolute pinnacle example of this phenomena, and as far as I'm concerned it is one of the best games I've ever played. The key to its success is how well Persona 4 juxtaposes mundanity and fantasy in a divide that runs right through its heart. This fantasy-mundanity split is the cornerstone to its success. In Persona 4 there is a clear dichotomy drawn between these two elements and the lines are adhered to, and reinforced, with nearly every design choice. But first, a brief overview of the game.

Persona 4 is about a gang of highschoolers and their bizarre anthromorphised friend trying to solve a supernatural murder mystery. In the game people are thrown into a mysterious world inside tvs and killed by the physically manifested form of their subconscious emotions (known as shadows - yes Jungian philosophy is quite prevalent in this franchise) if they're still inside the TV when the weather turns foggy. The victims appear on the supernatural midnight channel, which occurs at midnight on rainy nights. Your task; to work out who is going to be kidnapped, go inside the television world and save them from themselves before they start wrestling their own shadows, all the while trying to figure out the killers identity and modus-operandi, whilst also having a regular school life in wich you hang out with your friends, become a wagie, meet new people and study for exams. The small scale this setting creates a very compelling narrative, and its because of this reduced scale that P4 can work its magic due to the fact that actions in the game have very real consequences.

The small town of Inaba provides the purpose canvass for this mundane small time murder mystery. The game wants you to care about Inaba so the level of projection facilitates the most powerful elements of the game. Let me provide some examples of the fantasy-mundanity split. Persona 4 has two very distinct halves; in the most utilitarian terms possible its 50% socialising sim, 50% JRPG. Persona 4's social mundane daily life in Inaba directly contrasts the fantastic J-RPG wildness of the television worlds, and the game design books confirm that the purpose of Inaba is to be overflowing with realism, as the TV world is supposed to be its visual polar opposite. The recurring design element of the use of black and white used in direct contrast that's prevalent inside the game is used to represent that people have two sides to them and is an expression of the Persona power itself. This crops up throughout the game; the protagonist himself for example lends itself to this idea of duality. It starts with this concept and never really stops. The protagonist is from the city but moves to the countryside, he leaves one fantastic place for a mundane one, his clothes are black and white; the fog itself is a greyish colour, emerging of black and white into one colour with no distinct line separating the two, a lot like the protagonists grey eyes; the first character you meet is Igor, an elderly character dressed in a mundane black suit with a white shirt, who has a fantastical supernaturally long nose. It goes much further in the game itself, to an impressive degree, and its this that makes the game so great.

TLDR; 10/10 the best £15 you can spend

-Rep After a good game in DBD, i added him because he seemed like a cool guy. We got chatting, over the next couple of months we became good friends. Lots of banter, lots of great Toxic DBD rounds and most importantly true friendship. I invited him to my house for a DBD party. He said he was coming so i was looking forward to meeting him in real life. When he arrived at my house, he pushed me against the wall and started nibbling my ear, i felt his hard♥♥♥♥♥♥push against my leg. I punched him and then used DS on him. Turns out he was gay. Don't trust this guy.
