On the morning of May 5, 1923, a steam cargo ship en route to Mexico from a port in western France sank. The ship, with a crew of 35 men, set sail, carrying, among other things, 200 tons of mayonnaise as a gift from an eccentric French politician. News of the ship's sinking in the eastern Atlantic reached the Mexican people the evening of May 5. The Mexican people, devastated by the loss of this gift, hold a somber annual remembrance of the sinking of the mayonnaise ship, known as "sinko de mayo."
