FNV is probably the best Fallout game there is. It combines the charm of FO3, but removes some of the barren-ness. Moving through the Mojave desert never feels completely empty as the balance of distance between places has been maintained: giving you a feeling of exploration and adventure without you ever feeling like you're going the wrong way.

The way the tribes are distributed throughout the Mojave means you are balancing loyalties and feel like there's always someone to talk to. Combine this with the large amount of companions you can attract and it feels like a strong role-playing game.

The quests are unique, the vaults you encounter capture the horror/creepy factor, and the New Vegas Strip gives you some glitz and glamour. The crafting and maintaining systems, plus hardcore mode, means there's a lot of depth to the gameplay as you can modify your weapons and ammo and balance your thirst, hunger and sleep if you choose to.

The dialog is witty and you can navigate your way through the world as a nice or nasty person, siding with different factions depending on your playthrough.

There's some inherent wackiness, too, without jumping the shark too much. It is one of the most balanced FPS roleplaying games of all time, in every way.
