One of the most fun parks to make. I love building rides and boardwalks over water.

Um... I had to break my post up into three, since only 1000 characters were allowed, you'll want to read from the bottom post up the the previous one.

All in all, however, the game is still reasonable, and purely from a "make large, realistic photogenic cities" aspect it can't be beat, as the simulation/gameplay is great as far as traffic and other elements goes. It's really only as you start to play for an extensive amount of time that the gaps show through.

I would definitely pick it up before Sim City 5, as some of those big selling points (inter-city trade, freeform roads) are accomplished better here in Cities XL. However, if you are up for a more targeted Transportation game instead of a general City Builder, Cities in Motion 2 is very good and solves all of the annoyances I remember having with the original, highly recommended. I've also posted extensively on that game in the forums, starting here:

Many of the faults that other people mentioned are quite valid however. The biggest problem is how static the cities feel. Both the density and quality of the houses/industries are zoned by you, so they don't change organically over time. This static feeling negatively impacts the game directly, as well as indirectly by making it too easy. For example you'll never have the Sim City 4 problem of having a bunch of $$$ housing get downgraded to $$, causing a shortage of $$$ employees and too many $$, as well as a drop in taxes. Do you try to resolve the issue to save the $$$ industries, let it sort itself out as $$$ industries are replaced by $$?

Those sorts of ebb and flows are almost entirely absent from Cities XL.

Hey Don, I know that you asked me somewhere on Steam how I liked Cities XL, but I cannot for the life of me find where, so I'll just reply here!

I posted a lot of my thoughts on the forums, starting here: http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/46712?page=3#comment-2534286

In short, it is a gorgeous game, and it's also quite fun. I definitely don't regret the $20 I spent on it. Must of the highlights are the intuitive inter-city trading system and the freedom in building roads, and of course the tremendous map size.
