I never liked turn based games, never played DnD and had a low interest for RPGs in general, save for a few MMOs. This game did something special for me, it made me try something I wouldn't ever try otherwise, and it was amazing!

The story, the characters, the customisation, the music, the atmosphere, the combat, the environment... It was just astounding.

I came in with no expectations, and came out amazed more than I could ever imagine.

10/10

This game is my childhood. Thank you for bringing it back.

Now for the review:

This is a game where you take care of different kinds of creatures, also known as norns, ettins and grendels. They think and act for themselves, you can teach them a bunch of stuff, care for them, or experiment on them. The choice of what to do is yours, but you also have to make your own fun.

Under the hood the game has quite complex mechanics, like biochemistry, DNA and other things, which you can monitor and influence with the included tools, or you can download community tools, which brings me to the community.

The community is really nice and helpful, and over the lifespan of this game, they've created tons of custom content for the game, like new rooms, tools, toys, machines, new creature breeds and pretty much anything else you can think of.

While this game probably is not for everyone, it's forever in my heart.

Very high quality mod. Might not be for everyone, but I would definitely encourage any Half Life or Portal fan to jump in. The length also surprised me, as it was longer than either of the HL2 episodes.

It fits in the Half Life universe quite well and provides a unique point of view. I loved that the authors weren't scared of taking some big story steps. I was a bit afraid that they would just stick to something small and safe, but they didn't - and it worked out great!

I bought this just to see my shield percentage. 10/10

Edit: Everyone now sees their shield percentage. I can be a space taxi for my friends tho, so it's all good.

Amazingly reworked Half Life 1, graphics are great, story is kept the same with added details that weren't in the original game. Xen is beautiful. This is a must buy.

If you're looking for a space game, this game is pretty unique. If you don't mind the grind, it's not all bad.

It also runs on a toaster while managing to look decent.

Now for the details:

About the P2W:

This game can be a "bit" p2w. I play the game since Beta and I've bought one DLC pack - because I like how the ship looked. That's all you need to know :D.

There are hundreds of modules, weapons, configurations, etc. If something kills you easily, consider that the player might just understand the game better. It's really hard to master.

Community:

A lot of Russians, if you're from NA, you will probably not have the best experience. EU and RU are OK. Community is still active, ignore steamcharts as a lot of players use native launcher.

Overall most people I've met over the years were great!

Clans (corporations in game) are really fun and I highly recommend joining one. You can then join endgame content which is great and probably the most fun. PvP clan battles are probably the most fun I've ever had in this game.

Combat

Combat in this game is easy to learn, hard to master. There are many factors that lead to a win or defeat. You will have to make a setup that suits you. The controls are easy to get into, because developers opted to go for arcade over realism - in this case, it worked really well.

Customization:

If you're a theorycrafter, you will love this, as there are not that many resources on what works and what doesn't, so you can make unique builds that will stomp on players in ways they don't expect. I love crit builds personally.

Customization is great, you can make a ship your own - you can select shield/hull resists, weapon (damage type, range, damage, etc.), Engines, Capacitors and CPUs (many different characteristics from crit to crowd control resist).

Cosmetics are paid only.

PvP:

Random PvP feels kinda unrewarding. Also they keep releasing op stuff and nerfing it. So sometimes it's great, sometimes it's bad. "Contest/esport" mode is more fun, because some modules are disabled, making it a more balanced experience overall.

PvE:

There are quite a few PvE missions, but they get kinda old. Some of them are better than others, but I personally dislike the PvE insignia/leveling system, even though the rewards are great.

Story/campaign:

Campaign is basically a To-Do list, but it's ok. Story is meh, but you will not find any super deep lore here.

Open Space:

Open Space is fun, but going in solo doesn't feel great. You can mine, fight and do missions there.

Conclusion:

Overall, if you want to play a Space shooter, give this one a try. It's free and fun. It's easy to get into and the community is pretty nice. If you stop having fun, you can always quit =).

It's like if you took CS and CoD and made it into one game. It's fun for a bit, but there's nothing super original/interesting about this game. Still, it's free, give it a try =)

Good game. Also watching speedrunners overloaded my brain.
