Boris Tabarnakovski   Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada
The first time Boris Yeltsin visited the United States was in the year 1989, when he was still just a member of the Soviet Parliament. After touring the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Yeltsin and his entourage made an unscheduled stop at a supermarket. Yeltsin walked up and down the aisles of the store, nodding his head in amazement. He told the other Russians in his entourage that if his own people saw an American supermarket, there would be a revolution. When he saw the frozen pudding pops, he commented "Even the politburo doesn't have this choice. Not even Mr. Gorbachev."

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Yeltsin publicly commented that his visit to an American supermarket was the moment he realized that communism had failed.
