SteamOS brewmaster update 2.49 released

This is the same content that was pushed to brewmaster_beta last week.

Along with this update, the default downloads at http://repo.steampowered.com/download have been switched from alchemist to brewmaster. We are not planning any further updates to alchemist.

This is a large update, moving to the 4.1 kernel and updated video drivers for NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards. Also blacklisted various keyboards and mice that were erroneously showing up as joystick devices.

Nice work, appreciate it. I'm glad the official mirrors will reflect brewmaster. Of note, it appears the custom installer link in the DIY page resolves, but the default installer link does not.

Sadly, I just did a fresh install of this on my computer and it's unusable.

After installing, it'll boot into the desktop mode to get my Wifi setup. That works fine. It will then update Steam (about 247MB). Then it restarts. Upon starting up it now goes to "Checking for updates..." and then quickly to "Verifying installation...", then quickly to a black screen, and then the screen reappears showing the exact same things mentioned above. It will do this infinitely.

I have tried removing my wifi dongle to disable the internet connection. It instead will show the mouse cursor for a mere second, then black screen, then mouse cursor again infinitely.

I have tried CTRL+ALT+F1 to access the fullscreen terminal, but whatevers happening is preventing me access. I will see the terminal for a quick second, then black screen, then terminal, then black screen infinitely.

System:
CPU: Intel i7-4770 3.4GHz
GPU: Nvidia GTX 680 2GB
RAM: 24GB DDR3 1600MHz

Boot is UEFI. Using the SteamOSDVD.iso from 28-Oct-2015.

My 360 controller that I got from Game Stop doesn't work on SteamOS. Should I make a new thread explaining? It's being recognized as a Logitech controller, but the controller says “Controller for Xbox 360-BB-070” on the back. To navigate I have to press “B” for “A” and I have to use the left thumbstick to navigate the UI, the D-Pad doesn't work. When I go into the BPM settings and manually set the button bindings they aren't remembered after a reboot even though I save them. When I play a game the supports controllers it works fine.

Is there any way I can retrieve an older image of SteamOS Brewmaster? I've tried multiple times now with the 28 October 2015 build, and it will not work.

Are there limitations on what the sizes for the storage should be?
I'm currently setting the root / to 50GB and in a separate partition on the same HDD I'm setting the /Home to 500GB. This is in expert install on a 2TB HDD. The HDD is empty besides SteamOS.

Whatever happens after updating for the first time (237,209KB update) makes it completely unusable. I'm stuck on a Checking For Updates/Verifying Installation loop.

Is there a way I can cancel the update after connecting to the WiFi for the first time. Essentially, can I bypass the update procedure and get logged in at least once first? I never get the chance to input my user credentials.

Also, I'm never met with a EULA before setting up WiFi. Is this expected behaviour?

Is it absolutely necessary to have all four of those partitions? I'm already using a swap space I made on my SSD, but I've been skipping the /boot/recovery partition.

With /home the size says maximum allowed. What does this mean? Is it the maximum space I allow it to take?

Or is it the maximum remaining space of the HDD? I was under the impression that SteamOS no longer needed to take over the entire drive to operate. That it could share space. Is this incorrect?

I don't know if you can do without the recovery, as it is part of the install process, and post-install steps. /home can be as much space as you want to assign it. So yes, maximum remaining space.

Alright, I'll experiment. Since UEFI allows more than 4 partitions on a drive now I don't have anything to lose. I'll setup the four partitions you've described, then attempt to leave one partition empty as I intend to use it for something else later. The process takes quite long though.

The installation with this version of SteamOS takes me about 1 hour. That's with the install media on a USB 3.0 pendrive. To put it in perspective, Ubuntu takes under 15 minutes to install with the same media on the same drive. I'm worried something is off. Thank you for assisting regardless.

I got this update today and still have 2 issues...

1. I have to map the buttons of my controller after every reboot (Speedlink XEOX)

2. I get no sound (BPM & Desktop)
Sound should go over HDMI to my TV (Port1) but in BPM Sound over my GeForce shows as HDMI Port 4 (only has one).

In desktop I can set Sound to HDMI Port 1 but sound does not appear.

I have tried 3 or 4 workarounds but none worked...

...

I want some changes in my System that may solve these problems but if not, its annoying...

I want to:

1. Use the Steam controller instead of my Speedlink.
2. Want to use a GeForce GTX 650 instead of my GT 420.

But even if it works with these other components for me, the issue is still not solved for other people.

My DIY Steam Machine:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
RAM: 2x 2GB TEAM Elite DDR2-800MHz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 420 1 GB (maybe soon GTX 650 1GB)

Screen: 32" Funai Full HD

Even after following the designated expert install scheme as outlined above, it does not work.

I'll get as far as Preparing Hardware Drivers... with the Steam Logo, then it will proceed to show me the mouse pointer for a split second then black screen. Then pointer then black screen, ad infinitum.

All I have attached to my computer is:
1. External hdd via USB 3
2. DLink Wifi dongle via USB.
3. Keyboard/Mouse/Headphones via USB.

That's it. It can't be anymore simple. I'm at my wits end. I spent yesterday and all of today trying to get this to work. Multiple reinstalls. I even left it overnight at the screen where it says "Checking for Updates/Verifying installation" just in case it was doing something ( 6+ hours ). It's broken.

I need help.

What is your hardware, you need to help us to help you. I do suggest starting a thread in the Steam Universe forum under the SteamOS tag so folks can follow it and help you better than an announcement thread. How did you create the installer? Hopefully you didn't use Unetbootin.
