SteamOS brewmaster update 2.80 pushed to brewmaster_beta
Major changes for this update is the inclusion of the new RC1 AMD GPU PRO driver with Vulkan and VDPAU support. As well as the usual collection of security fixes.

READ THIS IF YOU HAVE AN AMD GRAPHICS CARD
  • The new AMD driver is ONLY enabled if you have a "Bonaire" GPU
  • We will be enabling the new driver for other GPUs as AMD completes testing.
  • If you have problems or bugs with the new driver, please report them to AMD's Steam Linux forum[community.amd.com] which AMD will be monitoring.

Awesome news! But what a terrible time to be away from home (only have access to my laptop for the next while)

Great set of updates! I am still a bit curious about the predicament I found myself in with https://github.com/ValveSoftware/SteamOS/issues/523 recently with several applications.

Keep up the great work! Much appreciated.

Which GPUs are counted as Bonaire here? Just the R7 260?

AMD GPU will mean a lot for Linux, because for the first time in the existence of Linux you will be able to install Linux and have fully functional video support without installing additional drivers. I.e. it is a big step in readying Linux for the desktop.

... and John Vert just made it more ready for the living room.

For the clueless lot :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

mentions a few more :
- HD 7790
- HD 8770
- R7 260
- R7 260X
- R7 360
- R9 360

Great naming scheme.

It'd be a good idea to pull in libdrm, Mesa and LLVM updates from jessie-backports.

At this point it may be better to start testing with Mesa 12, since that will launch with the initial Vulkan support for Intel. Mesa 12 rc1 was released a few hour ago, the release is expected to happen on the 10th of June.

and for Tonga (R9 380)?

That's really nice but anyone knows why SteamOS still use Nvidia 355.0028 driver? Doesn't any of the latest 36x be better than this? No doubt there is a good reason but It looks odd and some games requires 36x drivers... Are we supported?

This said, I'm really happy for AMD users. I decided to switch to Nvidia a couple of years ago because of bad linux driver support. I would still be an AMD user if I didn't got "affraid" by my bad experience. Maybe my next gpu...
