There’s even brand new support for shader cache in the steam client beta. ;-)

Flatpak? Interesting, but why?

Because packaging games in multiple distros is a pain. Different libraries and so on. CMIIW

My question was rather why would SteamOS need it? all it's supposed to do is run steam and games and I doubt they are delivered via flatpak

Probably flatpak is for Steam?

They could be pushing tetsing of how the runtime may factor into this.

They could adopt flatpak as the distribution format for games on steam !
Then you get support for different versions of the runtime for cheap and more robustness against underlying OS changes.

We do want to make it easier to install non-Steam applications on SteamOS and flatpak looks like a promising start in that direction. That said, it's not close to ready yet and this update is just to enable some experimentation and future development.

We have no plans to ever deliver Steam applications as flatpaks.

Thanks for clarifying, that does sound like a good plan. Would be great to have a Kodi flatpak so I wouldn't need custom repos potentially breaking SteamOS updates!

Kodi as a flatpak? Netflix as a flatpak? ProfessorKaos64 as a flatpak? :)
