Oculus Rift + Sixense Stem = VR mode
As an open platform is the intention of you Valve is allowing peripherals from other companies as well as the PC allows (unlike the Playstation and Xbox are closed architectures, made more difficult the process of peripherals from other companies)
I think the main peripherals that you have to support is the Oculus rift and Sixense Stem (new Razer Hydra wireless), that because the two create the perfect virtual reality, the SteamOS would have come with a VR mode, and Valve has to facilitate technology adoption in your platform!
could have up to a KIT with both in partnership with two companies!

Projects like Virtuix Omni and Tactical Haptics are also interesting and complementary:

Occulus Rift is already supported in VALVe's TF2. I believe they were one of the first to adopt it.

I'm pretty sure VALVe will push for this kind of innovation.

The Oculus Rift is already supported on Linux. And I'd find it hard to believe STEM wouldn't be.
