The starting point to dig Rollcage
codemonkey just posted in this thread an old tool that was used to edit Rollcage tracks.

Rollcage Editor[www.codemonkey.me.uk]

Disclaimer:

I have no idea how to use this editing software - asking me questions about it is likely to be met with a blank look. I sometimes saw the level designers using it, but never at length as they worked in a different part of the building to that of the coders. You'll need DosBox at the very least in order to make it run on a modern system. There is some sample data lying around it seems for you to try and explore with. This software is likely just one tool of 3 or 4 that you will probably need to do anything meaningful - a search is on for the others.

Notes:

Saracen is the name that we gave to the internal racing engine that Rollcage was built on. It was then used to produce Ducati Racing (ATD) and a Dukes of Hazard racing game produced by another development company in the states.

I'm still exploring this whole idea with David Perryman, one of the level designers on Rollcage, to see if we can somehow fire up a level designing workflow. No promises, but we'll do what we can.

Good luck!

I propose to write in the newly created subforum Rollcage digging : trying to extract/edit these maps everything useful we can find about this software.
Right now, we know almost nothing about it. All we know is that it was used by the Rollcage development team.

I don't need to describe you what could be possible if we succeed in using this tool. That would be the first step to design new tracks for our beloved game.

So, good luck to everyone who wants to give it a try :)

Nice to hear ! I will also try to run this tool, and post what I find. I just hope I won't need Windows 95 to run it

If the game fails to load or quits with an error dialog, the most likely reason is that the files "Track1.btp" and "Track1.blp" do not exist in the data directory.
Check the spelling of those file names.
This is priceless :P Having a file explorer was maybe too much to implement back at that time I guess

For now this is the best thing I have (Windows XP in VirualBox) ;(

So I need to build a PC just to run the editor... looking around for some parts... ;]

The editor does not play nice with DOSBox and virtual machines over here either, so I'm gonna try to run it on one of my older computers tomorrow. We're still lacking a lot of tools, but if this editor is functional enough, we can at least try to get some experimentation with level design going on using the Ducati engine tester :D

@BNJ: Windows 95 compatibility mode doesn't do anything when you're trying to run 16-bit applications on a 64-bit operating system.

Did anybody try Wine to run it ?

Wine bit me in the ass when I needed it the most a few years ago, so I just dualboot nowadays.

Nice ! How did you do it ?
t_n_o May 20, 2015 @ 4:30am
Easy :) Use cmd to go to directory where is the editor and just run ED.BAT :p This batch file runs editor with parameters that are stored in EDPARAM.TXT. That's for now... because I'm still at work :/

So I've made my first track and raced on it.
It's the shape of a dick.

We're missing the Harpoon, Neoto, Saphire and Outworld .mbg's. If we get the dirt on it, we can create our own .mbg's (basically themes).
We're missing models as well, but that's not that big of an issue, 'cause making a building out of 30 polygons isn't that hard.
Getting the original Rollcage tracks as .blp&.btp tracks would be amazing, so I'm crossing my fingers for that.

Next up is modifying Rollcage Redux and allow it load .blp&.btp tracks, I guess? I'll leave that up to the man with source code access ;p

i thought someone had already accessed the rollcage files? im a complete noob when it comes to techical stuff so for now im mostly following what people find. i tried running it on virtualbox and got a mess of pixels and sadly our old win xp stopped working recently.

with the original levels editable we could finally make what everybodys waiting for, kaizo rollcage where just getting around the level is near impossibility.

would be cool if it was possible perhaps loading custom levels from the folder via debug if thatd be easier to implement? but now im getting ahead of myself.
