Instructions on how to solve some common problems with connection to the gameservers

When you have troubles connecting to server, look up the console for information, such as error text or kick message

Map does not match the version on the server. (String table differs)

• You have the map installed, but the version is wrong. Delete the map you have, and redownload it, following the instructions.
  
• In some rare cases this error can pop up randomly, even if you properly installed the map. In that case, restarting your game will help.

Host_Error: CMapLoadHelper::Init, unable to open maps/map_name.bsp

• You don't have the *.vpk file installed in the addons folder.
  
• If you do, it means the custom map is disabled in the L4D2 main menu addons list.

Connection failed after X retries

If your internet is working fine, and the server is working fine, but the server is still not responding to you, and your connection progress bar is stuck at the beginning, one of the following will help:

• Change cl_resend to default value, or lower (6 or lower)
  
• Change your clientport, by this instruction https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/48C1-A297-4839-8BB8
  
• Enable VPN

Server is enforcing consistency for this file: models/infected/hunter.mdl / gameinfo.txt

• Restart your game
  
• If that didn't help, disable all addons in L4D2 main menu addons list (except the custom map you need now)
  
• If that didn't help, verify integrity of your game cache in Steam Library

Illegal Client Value / Wrong ConVar value: sv_consistency / mat_disable_bloom / or any other

One of the following will help:

• Try to manually change this console variable to the value the server requires.
  If this helps, but you face the same issue after you restart the game, check if you have this console variable set in your autoexec.cfg or launch parameters
  
• Disable all addons in L4D2 main menu addons list (except the custom map you need now), then restart the game

BinkOpen( c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\media\l4d2_background03.bik )

This is not an error, everyone sees this in console all the time

The game shows you a warning about -insecure parameter

This warning indicates that VAC is disabled. This is not an error, this is how it's supposed to work when you are playing with the Anticheat. Simply ignore this warning

Invalid host version, expecting X, got Y

• If X is greater than Y: the server is outdated, requires admin to update it
  
• If X is less than Y: your game is outdated, you need to update it

Invalid rates or lerp

Put this in console before joining the server

• rate 100000; cl_cmdrate 100; cl_updaterate 100; cl_interp_ratio 1; cl_interp 0

"No Steam logon" error

• Restart game and reconnect
  
• If it doesn't help, restart Steam

Could not validate your account with Steam. Restart your game.

This error stems from a new L4D2 bug that is incompatible with our DDoS protection setup. Valve has been notified of the issue and has confirmed its validity, but it has not been fixed yet. During l4d2center games, this issue only affects players using split-tunneled VPNs—where the game uses the VPN connection while other apps do not—or when the user’s IP address changes between connection attempts. In order to fix, try the following

• Restart your game. It might take more than 1 attempt, but shouldn't take more than 2 in any case. Do not restart Steam or computer, it won't do anything; and do not wait too long between reconnection attempts.
  
• If your VPN app allows that, set your IP address to static in its settings, or make the anticheat use the same client IP address as your game.
  
• Disable VPN.

You download a .7z file. You need to open it with 7zip or winrar, and extract the .vpk file
