FPS & Digital Image Quality Problem Set #1
* NOTE:
* Some settings SECRETLY require you to RESTART SteamVR and your HMD.
* Enable "Advance Settings" in the bottom left of SteamVR Settings too
โ€ข [1A]โ–บ ALL PCVR FIX: When your VR game is running make sure the VR window is "selected" and in the foreground on your DESKTOP (actively click it with the mouse)
โ€ข [1B]โ–บ QUEST PCVR FIX: Try out BOTH SteamVR mode and try to launch the game using the Oculus mode.
โ€ข [2]โ–บClose all your other windows, and programs you don't need.
โ€ข [3]โ–บChange your SteamVR Settings GENERAL:MotionSmoothing * (on should make fake frames to make it feel like more FPS, but this CAPS your GPU at literally half your VR HMD max rate. So unless you have a very bad GPU, usually you want this setting off)
โ€ข [4]โ–บChange your SteamVR Settings to a CUSTOM value in GENERAL:RenderResolution:Custom * (aka Super Sampling. "auto" does a lower % which is faster FPS but worse GFX. 100% means the GPU matches your VR HMD resolution.)
๐Ÿ’ฅWARNING: You often have to RESTART SteamVR for this to fully work.
๐Ÿ˜ฒWOW: Some find setting to 160% (not lower) or 200% can improve FPS better tooโ—
โ€ข [5]โ–บTry disabling SteamVR Settings GENERAL:SteamVrHome * (this is the slow and pretty room vs the simple and fast Steam dashboard interface
โ€ข [6]โ–บGoogle the Antivirus app you are running. Some are "bad" for gaming.
โ€ข [7]โ–บIf you are using any type of extension cord or adapter on the video side, try one of the CONFIRMED working ones listed here
โ€ข [8]โ–บ Try evaluating the video quality BEFORE you tap the power/SteamVR button* on your controller
โ€ข [9]โ–บ Try making sure the game is MAXIMIZED and in the front/focus on your desktop. Reason: many VR games are not well optimized and this act makes them TURN blurry for the rest of that play session.
โ€ข [10]โ–บ Try disabling SteamVR's advanced supersampling filtering (in advance settings) and restart SteamVR to take effect.
โ€ข [11]โ–บ Try making the HMD run cooler by using a fan on you or the HMD*, on you, or making the room cooler.
โ€ข [12]โ–บ PRIORITY FIX: In TaskManager>Details find"SteamVR" & "SteamVRWebHelper" & "SteamClientWebHelper" & "vrcompositor.exe", and/or "OVRServer_64.exe". On each right click, "Set Priority", then "High". NOTE: You must either do this manually after each start, OR use an app like "Process Lasso" to AUTO initiate it.
โ€ข [13]โ–บ If on Rift/Quest limit your bandwidth in the Oculus/Meta desktop's settings per the reply #29 picture here. (to the lowest, which is like 33 kbs, so it doesn't take from your game's data transfer needs.

Hardware Issues Steps Set #2
Start here in Set #2 if you have general VR issues (or #1 above, if Frame Rate issues)
โ€ข [A]โ–บUnplug all your VR cables (including power to things like link boxes & HMD, all USB, all video lines) and do a "restart" (reboot), plug it all back in, and test it again. Many "hard" problems are software fixes.
โ€ข [B]โ–บConfirm your Windows OS and Graphics GPU drivers are all up to date (CRITICAL!)
โ€ข [C]โ–บTemporarily UNPLUG your monitor from the PC. Switch your VR ~AND~ your monitor to different ports. Sometimes once it works, you can then go BACK to your original ports and be all fixed still. Sometimes the monitor has to plug into the motherboard vs the GPU.
โ€ข [D]โ–บConfirm your HMD + controller + Video card's firmware is up to date, and consider repairing your controllers through SteamVR settings
โ€ข [E]โ–บChange your "beta" testing opt in/out choice within Steam & also within SteamVR (right click properties in the "tools" portion of the Library. Try one, try both, then back.)
โ€ข [F]โ–บDo a full windows "shutdown" (not sleep) and unplug all VR cables and power
โ€ข [G]โ–บTemporarily remove any extensions or adapters
โ€ข [H]โ–บTurn on PC, wait a minute for all to load, close any programs in the system tray that you can do without, plug everything back in, then re-test the issue
โ€ข [I]โ–บ Try using different USB ports on your PC (sometimes software will change in ways that make a USB port stop working "good enough" for VR to work right)
โ€ข [J]โ–บ Try directly uninstalling OTHER drivers (like mouse, headset, etc) in the order of most recently installed. Installation of "minor drivers" can sometimes break Steam VR drivers.
โ€ข [K]โ–บIf it's never worked, and you are using an adapter or extension, look at the "VR Adapter & Extension" thread in here https://steamcommunity.com/groups/joinusinvr/discussions/0/ to see if others have had the same issue or not.
โ€ข [L]โ–บ Try making the HMD run cooler by using a fan on you or the HMD*, on you, or making the room cooler.

Common Quick Solutions Set #3
โ€ข [1A]โ–บ Submit a "hardware support request" HERE telling them your problem and any error codes (this will help escalate a reliable fix for all, & may EXTEND your return/warranty window)
โ€ข [1B]โ–บ ...and click SteamVR's menu and "Create System Report", and attach that to your "hardware support request".
โ€ข [1C]โ–บ ...and if you want a BIG head start with Steam Support, provide a MSINFO32 report too https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4840-QWJX-0408
โ€ข [1D]โ–บ ...and if you want a HUGE head start with Steam Support, in Windows Start go to Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application. Then Right-click on the Application and select Save All Events As. Send that to them too.
โ€ข [2]โ–บ In SteamVR--> Settings--> Developer--> click the "Remove all SteamVR USB Devices" button near the bottom, then re-test
โ€ข [3]โ–บ Toggle "Direct mode" and retest, then set it back again. Then test the problem.
โ€ข [4]โ–บ Uninstall SteamVR (from the "tools" group of games)
โ€ข [5]โ–บ Browse to the SteamVR folder and DELETE IT
. . . . . . C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR
โ€ข [6]โ–บ Reinstall SteamVR from the store and re-test
โ€ข [7]โ–บ Toggle "Direct mode" and retest, then set it back again.
โ€ข [8]โ–บ Unplug and re-plug the long cable from the HMD.
โ€ข [9]โ–บ Try to remove, or try different combinations of, adapters and extensions. Note that sometimes ADDING an extension or adapter can hurt, & sometimes it can literally HELP.
โ€ข [9]โ–บ If it is only SOME games with loading or startup issues, and you have a newer 11th or 12th Gen Intel, try this:
โ€ข Right click โ€œThis PCโ€, and select โ€œPropertiesโ€, "Advanced System Settings"
โ€ข Select โ€œEnvironment Variablesโ€ in the โ€œAdvancedโ€ tab, Select โ€œNewโ€ฆโ€ under โ€œSystem variablesโ€ and create this:
Variable name: OPENSSL_ia32cap
Variable value: ~0x200000200000000,

Solution Set #4A - Jittery Tracking
Is your controllers or headset jittery? Might be a tracking issue. Often, this is caused by external light or reflections off shiny surfaces...
โ€ข BEST CHECK.... Build a "blank fort"โ• ....literally bring 1 lighthouse, and your HMD under a blanket. No need to re-do room setup. Just go under it and try to reproduce the issue. If it's fixed, then you know it's an external light or reflection issue.
โ€ข EXTERNAL LIGHT.... Turn off the lights and close any blinds. The sun and any light, including invisible infrared lights can mess things up. If this fixes it, then turn things back on one at a time, and find the issue.
โ€ข REFLECTIONS... Cover up things like mirrors, Windows, TV screens, transparent glass, shiny dark surfaces like plastics, even door knobs and your rings/necklace/watch. Everything. If this fixes it, then start uncovering things, half the stuff at a time, untill you pinpoint the source.
โ€ข If none of that fixed it, then go try some of the other solution sets. Often the resetting of USB ports, software stuff, developer stuff, and other things listed her will fix it.

Solution Set #4B
โ€ข [A]โ–บ Submit a hardware support request telling them your problem and any error codes (this will help escalate a reliable fix for all) (see Set #3 for what to send them before they even ask for it)
โ€ข [B]โ–บ Close all of Steam then move this file to another location
. . . . . . C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config\steamvr.vrsettings
โ€ข [C]โ–บ Open Steam and try to re-test the issue
โ€ข [D]โ–บ Uninstall SteamVR, repeat [C], then reinstall SteamVR, & re-test the issue
โ€ข [E]โ–บ Uninstall Steam, repeat [C], then reinstall, & re-test the issue
โ€ข [F]โ–บ AMD GPU with a Quest 2 or 3 over link having issues (like blurriness, stutters, controller tracking glitches, etc.) can read this reply for a solution.
โ€ข [G]โ–บ Set Nvidia Control Panel > 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings > Global > set 'Power management mode:' to 'Prefer maximum performance."'. Make sure it is not set on Optimal or Adaptive.
โ€ข [H]โ–บ Set Nvidia Control Panel > 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings > Global > set 'Preferred graphics processor:' to 'High Performance NVIDIA processor'. Make sure it is not set on Auto-select or Integrated graphics.
โ€ข โ–บ FishTail owns and loves the KIWI Index Fan. If your VR is overheating, it would make a big difference.

Solution Set #5
โ€ข โ–บ The members of JoinUsInVR own all types of headsets. Click subscribe then POST a comment here to get some custom help.
โ€ข โ–บ Try "disabling" other unneeded apps in the SATRUP area and reboot (save screen shot of what was on before you disable things, and NEVER disable a Microsoft item!)
โ€ข โ–บ Try opting in to any "beta" testing within Steam or SteamVR
โ€ข โ–บ Try to reproduce the issue on another game, another PC, and then another VR device. Replace broken things that you find.
โ€ข โ–บ Try using an AC outlet on a different house circuit breaker since sometimes devices (like microwaves, motors, florescent lights, etc) can cause electrical interference that yields strage results.
โ€ข โ–บ Reply to your original "hardware support request", start off by saying "I still need help" and then list out everything you already tested (copy paste from above) and tell them the issue is still the same.
โ€ข โ–บ click SteamVR's menu and "Create System Report", and attach that to your "hardware support request".
โ€ข โ–บ ...and if you want a BIG head start with Steam Support, provide a MSINFO32 report too https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4840-QWJX-0408
โ€ข โ–บ Make sure you did everything Steam suggests https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3803-QDGM-9237
โ€ข โ–บ Calculate how much money you spent over teh years playing 2D games (hundreds of games, monitor, fancy mouse and keyboard, controller, headphones, a mic, etc) then sell your VR for parts to FishTail and use the cash towards a new one.

Advance Solutions: General
A1โ€ข Small kinks in the cable could be a sign of a weak spot inside. That can give you snow pixels, error codes like 436, or even an intermittent or full disconnect of VR. Try to find a new bend position that makes it work, then secure it with tape in that position onto something ridged like a pen. To prevent it, try the "Improve the Cord" trick shown in the "More Tips & Tricks" section at tips.JoinUsInVR.com .

A2 โ€ข Start at the top of this page with Set 1, and work your way down. It's listed in the order that's likely to fix most problems. Reply with a comment at the very bottom, and jump in our group's chat.JoinUsInVR.com to get even more help.
A3โ€ข Keep in mind, sometimes VR hardware is bad, and you can't do a thing about it. In those cases Steam Support will usually identify this and point you towards a solution.
A4โ€ข Some VR manufacturers will allow you to do a free exchange. Some will even proactively send you parts to try first (like a new cable)
A5โ€ข If it seems like your resolution settings (Super Sampling) are ignored, it's possible SteamVR is capping your resolution. You can exit steam and edit ...\Steam\config\steamvr.settings file to set "GpuSpeed = XXXX" where XXXX is a very large number, such as 100,000,000. SteamVR monitors your last 10 SteamVR sessions to identify it's cap. Once this number is below 1.5, your resolution is being restricted. So you will need to frequently edit this number again, and set it extremely large, to overcome this restriction.
A6 โ€ข If the issue is game specific, try an older version of the game as explained in this how-to downgrade link. Click here.
A7 โ€ข If your SteamVR Settings page won't load, or other SteamVR Dashboard buttons don't work or don't show up, make sure your SOUND DEVICES and MIC are NOT named with strange characters in Windows (proven to cause strange issues, and requires reboot too)
A8 โ€ข STEAM VR 2.1.9 make Steam Client WebHelper Crash due to too many (2D & VR) games installed. Solved in reply below https://steamcommunity.com/groups/joinusinvr/discussions/0/1661194916743042906/?ctp=2#c4039231510649742665

Advanced Solutions: BIOS, Monitor, MoBo & More
โ€ข If you find your flat screen monitor is not working right OR you can't see your BIOS, unplug your VR HMD and reboot (it sometimes shows up as the primary monitor when it should not)
โ€ข Some people have had to go to their PC's build webstie, then update all of the following to the latest: BIOS, Chipset, Intel Management Engine drivers, Video Card firmware, VBIOS from Firmware page (which indicated "Fix Oculus Rift S HDCP error" which also effected their Valve Index)
โ€ข Some people said they had to make sure their MDP is 1.2 version or higher and is connected to their dedicated GPU.
โ€ข Some people discover that issues like low fps in VR while flatscreen is fine fps, are only fixed by RE-INSTALLING windows.
โ€ข Some people like [ShrimpyJ] had an Index that was stuck on "searching" for base stations, then won a VR key because their issue was a bad Mother Board, and they did the VR Key Guarantee at the top of this page :D
โ€ข If your Quest has Stick Drift where the thumbstick no longer stays centered and you move uncontrollably, try the quick fix in this VIDEO (which requires re-applying periodically)
โ€ข Take a look through the replies below, and possibly find your solution in there, or at least try posting your problem so some of us can help

VR Adapter & Extension
โ€ข Need a mini-displayport to displayport adapter or similar? Click here....
https://steamcommunity.com/groups/joinusinvr/discussions/0/3356799628318460231/

Type-C Display Port: Index not found, or Error 436
โ€ข If when swapping cables between Primary display (Type-C Displayport) and Valve Index (Type-C Display port) the Index cannot be found to send display data (Error 436), try this fix: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/joinusinvr/discussions/0/2995423424882112181/

@unostudio153 if your steam account has never made a steam purchase (i.e. new or unused) then that could also be why you where unable to DM me.

Use the TEXT & VOICE chat.JoinUsInVR.com above instead.

RECENT UPDATE: Added input from @BOTTroy to the advanced section.
Here's how to play DiRT in VR. This method (the "patch" stuff) might help other Oculus games work in Steam VR too
---------------------------------
1. Download Oculus Home from here: https://www.oculus.com/setup/
2. Install Oculus home but skip the 1st time setup.
3. Download Revive here : https://github.com/LibreVR/Revive/releases
4. Install Revive
5. Once Revive is installed you should see a new icon down by the clock in windows task bar. Right click on it a choose "Patch..."
6. Navigate to your dirt install folder and select the drt.exe file so that Revive can patch it.
7. In your steam library right click on DiRT Rally and choose "Properties" then untick "Use Desktop Game Theate while Steam VR is active"
8. Run DiRT Rally and it should load into VR automatically.

If you find DiRt crashing or hanging then try using the SteamVR beta.
1. Go to your steam library
2. Choose "Tools" instead of "Games"
3. Find SteamVR and right click on it.
4. On the properties page choose "BETAS"
5. Then from the drop down list choose the latest BETA version

Steam will then update steamVR to the new BETA
So far the KIWI Index Fan seems to have worked like a charm. VR runs cooler AND it gives my face an very gentle breeze. Not enough to cool you down or water your eyes, but just enough to reduce fog and that clammy feeling.

My problem was only VR games (flatscreen worked fine) laging hard or not even being able to load and the only thing that solved it was reinstalling windows also contacting steam support they asked for windows logs and heres how you send them Open Event Viewer. Type Event Viewer in Windows Search.
On the left side, navigate to Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application.
Right-click on the Application and select Save All Events As

So glad your VR is working once again.

Equally glad you read the "VR Key Guarantee" at the top of this page regarding the chat.JoinUsInVR.com server. Let's see what games we have for you Yagyu :)

My issue was when I first got my Valve Index headset, I could ONLY get a sharp and clear picture quality when it was on 90Hz or lower, COULDN'T have the same quality on 120/144Hz.
What I did to solve the issue was turning the Resolution Scale from 100% to 200%, After changing it to 200%, I restarted SteamVR and then it worked!
Now I have a perfect and sharp looking picture quality on 120 & 144Hz. (It fixed random lags when I walked around, as well ! )
Hopefully that helps, Good luck!

Wow. Sounds like this is an AWESOME new discovery and worth the VR STEAM KEY you won.

So, at 100% or 150% Super Sampling resolution, your symptoms are "low frames per second at 120/144Hz & extra blurry (as compared to 90Hz clarity)"

BUT at 200% SS it is "clearer" (which is to be expected) but ALSO better "frames per second" (which is NOT expected).

As a test, please experiment with SS% numbers like 95%, and 105%, and 195% and DM me so I can give you your VR Steam Keyโ• I'm curious which %'s are "good" or "bad" on visual quality, and also on FPS speed. Many of us can't run at 200% due to weak GPU :/

Hey!
First of all, Thank you!

As for the test I tried every SS% number beyond 150, I found out that 160% is basically when the image starts to get sharper, So I would advice anyone who tries this solution to start from 160% and go higher the more you feel like, Don't forget to restart SteamVR everytime you change the number!
Good luck!

You are welcome, for the steam key. ANYONE else can do that guarantee and get one too.

So, take a look at the updated Set#1[4]. I worked in your point, in the simplest way I could. Please send me a DM if you have any other suggested tweaks.

In the meantime, click into the LFG at chat.JoinUsInVR.com and let's play some VR :D
I kept having the issue of my base stations not recognizing my vr index headset, I swapped my motherboard for a newer model and the problem was instantly fixed, I guess my old motherboard was having issues with recognizing the headset so it was constantly stuck on "searching" for the index headset even when it was directly in front of a base station. I've had this issue for 4 weeks back and forth with steam and getting a new motherboard finally fixed it after trying every single solution under the sun. Hopefully this helps someone out since the issue is similar to a lot of other index "searching" issues except the solution hasn't been posted which is to switch out or buy a new motherboard with lots of 3.0 USB ports.

Thank you!
