No Sound in Remote Play
Hi, I'm having problems with Steam Remote Play audio when playing any game or even just browsing my desktop. There is no sound at ALL, and I can't seem to figure out why. It used to work in the past, probably a few months ago at this point, and all of the sudden it no longer works with anything.

My audio system is running on Asus Xonar 7.1 sound drivers, which I have set to 2 channel stereo sound for the time being. I have reinstalled my sound drivers, and tried every available sound device, even Steam Streaming speakers, none of which have worked. My streaming audio is also not muted, because I have held escape to bring it up and the sound comes only from that when I adjust the volume level. I have also tried reinstalling Steam on both host and client devices.

I would be happy to provide any more information if anyone could help me, but this problem has been frustrating me for a while, so any input is greatly appreciated.

steam has 2 ways to capture sound from the host

either using steam streaming speakers (check windows audio devices, disable all unused devices, and enable streaming speakers, windows has trouble switching between more than 2 devices)

or from windows volume mixer, make sure steam client/bootsrapper volume is maxed

Hi, and thanks for responding so quickly. Unfortunately I had just tried this right now, and i have only the steam streaming speakers enabled and the volume mixer's steam client/bootstrapper is fully turned up. Not sure what else to do :(

if windows changed sound to streaming speakers, it should work

do you get menu and other sounds on the client when not streaming?
Bumping this thread as I'm having the same issue. Primarily tested on Elden Ring and Dead Cells (Dead Cells mainly for testing since it starts up quickly). I did get sound working once on Dead Cells by messing around with default speakers etc., but I'm not sure what exactly did it and it was short lived. I went to turn off the monitors on my host machine, came back to the client machine to start up Elden Ring, and no sound again.

Seems like this has been an issue for years at this point so I'm hoping someone can help. For what it's worth I have a Sound Blaster Audigy FX soundcard. Tried the suggested solutions in this thread so far and some others (disabling playback devices, setting different ones as default, using setting "play sound on host machine") with no results. My host machine shows sound activity visually in the sound panel coming into Steam Streaming Speakers, but I don't hear anything on the client.

the streaming speakers are one way steam can grab sounds
but they stop sound from going to the primary audio device on the host

if you do not want to use them, disable streaming speakers

and its always a good idea to disable all unused sound devices, so windows can easily switch between 2 commonly used ones
Bit out of this topic but how do you reinstall the streaming speakers/mic?

I had some problems with surround sound and uninstall them from the device manager on W10 and now cannot make them reappear, tried reinstalling steam, starting multiple streams, installing the .inf of the github page, nothing, I'm getting sound, Host detects 6 channels but client detects 2 :S gonna keep trying if I find a fix.

BTW, maybe you could share the streaming.log file to see what could be happening with your case.

it may still be installed, but ms defaults to hiding disabled devices

tick both of these

Thnx but already had that to no avail (I use Stereomix for audio editing), oh well gonna upgrade my PC later this year so I'll do a clean install

Yeap, install both .inf, It says install successful but even after restart still nothing, at least stereo works fine :P
