Galactic Civilizations 3 Megathread
I enjoyed GalCiv2 and signed up as a founder based on that experience and my enjoyment of Sins of a Solar Empire i.e. Stardock are worth backing. I'm sure I'll burn plenty of hours playing GalCiv3 particularly if their plans for the AI are well implemented regardless.

What concerns me is that so much of what we have seen is incremental improvements. Sure GalCiv3 should be mindful of what made GalCiv2 a good game. But what have we seen that will take the game to the next level? What is going to make GalCiv3 rocket past my current best ever Space 4X game in Distant Worlds?

Back at the end of 2013 Brad Wardell stated:

We generally subscribe to the Sid Meier design philosophy for new titles in a series:
•33% of the game should be the same as the previous
•33% of the game should be the features from the previous but enhanced
•33% of the game should be new features entirely

You've seen this with the previous Galactic Civilizations games and the same is true here.

So what exactly is the 33% in GalCiv3 that represents new features? Bigger maps on a 64 bit engine is a good one. But what else is "new" rather than enhanced?

I'm really hoping the new combat system is super cool. We know it will not be tactical combat but we also know it's much more sophisticated than GalCiv2. But again, it's an enhancement, not a new feature.

Help me GalCiv3 fans!

I totally agree, hence why I didn't buy into the game at all. I'll wait a year or two before commiting.

Yea, I saw the early screenshots and it doesn't LOOK like much has been added so far
Plus wasn't the presale price like $80? Gah

I would have completely agreed until this last patch. The diplomacy looks to be a giant improvement when it's all done, I am really liking the morality system (I forget what the call it) and the general mechanics feel much more fleshed out than GC2. The combat sucks right now (i.e. there IS NONE), but I'm pretty sure this one will end up being very polished and shiny when it's done.

It's already better than 90% of 4X games in the space scene as of late. I enjoy it much more than Endless Space. If they can implement a cool combat system, your fears should be put to rest.

Would you like a video of the game since the 'Beta 2' patch? It really is much better now.
Nasarog Oct 20, 2014 @ 11:40am
YEESSSSS please!
Icemania Oct 21, 2014 @ 4:14am
A video would be good for others but I'll just boot it up and have a look. If you can get a video scoop on the combat system ... well then you would have my undivided attention!!!

And just to be clear, I expect the game to be good, I just don't see any greatness yet.

Galactic Civilizations III
If any one here has this game I am currently working of Star Trek style ship designs. All from the TV shows. movies, Cannon designs as well as my own custom designs. I also working on making custome parts for Star Trek Ship.

See Galactic Civilization III screenshots for ships I have done. I will be sharing ship files ship parts files when I have enough ships done to form Fleets.

Recent game update broke all my Beta 1 ships. Redesigning all ship in Beta 2.

If you play GC3 and interested in my ships send me a PM with email addy and I will send out ship packs.

I agree with Icemania, the game will be good but so far I feel like the game has no soul, something has not yet caught my attention like DW did. Hopefully with the beta and release toping with some expansions the game will become a truly masterpiece.

I think with GalCiv it's a big ask just to get all the features from GalCiv2 + the expansions in to the base game. Sword of the stars 2 had the same problem and didn't make a solid, familiar and friendly base game. I think it's probably wiser to focus, as they are, on doing the core stuff first. But even so little things are making me interested already:
Building adjacency bonuses (new)
Nebula (new)
resources (more of them, planet resources I'm sure I heard mention of too)
And adding stuff from GalCiv2's expansions as standard:
asteroids
Unique tech-trees

I do think it needs some magic down the line to make it great. But I found GalCiv2 'meh' until Twilight of the Arnor - I think that was the one that added unique tech trees and asteroids? I'm not sure. But the maps aren't empty and it's progressing nicely. (Though I've had the odd crash, nothing game-stopping).
Nasarog Oct 22, 2014 @ 11:39am
That's pretty awesome. Will there be a a Titan class ship? I'm reading the books.
Airmaster Oct 22, 2014 @ 11:44am
I am making every class I can find. As long as ship parts are there or I am able to make my own I will do every class ship there is.

Ship Classes redone so far:

Ares Class. Pre TOS
Constitution Class, TOS
Constitution Class, TOS Refit

WIP: Excelsior Class.

i'll look you up after game release I think. It sounds good but im gonna hold off on custom content for a bit.
in the meantime... could you set up some links for viewing? Or is it on your steampage?

ty, good stuff :)
Nasarog Nov 4, 2014 @ 4:37am
Exactly. If you aren't sure, just wait. Stardock is a fantastic studio, but they've made some questionable choices in the past, so unless it's something that I must have (here's looking at you Star Control), I'm tempering my excitement. This way I won't be dissapointed in the game at release.

Are you still worried or have the latest developments assuaged your fears some?

Galactic Civilizations 3: Questions
All:

When Nasarog and Devildog have another podcast with Brad Wardell it would be useful to capture questions that we have and see what he says. Some topics to start below.

New Features

Reference: http://forums.galciv3.com/451045

"We generally subscribe to the Sid Meier design philosophy for new titles in a series:

The AI

The AI is what I'm looking forward to the most with GalCiv3.

Some concerns though.

http://steamcommunity.com/app/226860/discussions/1/35221031601736037/#c616189743049063093

Fleets without weapons is a pretty big flaw. How will they ensure this sort of error is avoided before Gal Civ 3 release?

Will Brad have a dedicated AI programmer in the team beyond himself? Otherwise I can't see how he will have the time to run the company, implement the AI and also maintain it. Brad's vision included monitoring player strategy and evolving the AI accordingly which will require a lot of time.

We desperately need a new 4X game with decent AI!!!
