Alliance of the Sacred Suns - Discussion Thread
So, I've been casually following the development of Imperia 5X, a space game that being developed by a singular developer, Steve Hawkins, and that is in some respects like a Crusader Kings in space. Color me interested!

Well - Steve posted recently that he has decided to transition from working on the game as a hobby project to rebuilding it and moving towards making it a commercial game, re-built in unity. Here's a snipped from his recent post[]:

I have been working on Imperia for almost a year now (10 months) and it started out as a single project that I was using to learn how to program. I reached a point in my development where I realized that I actually had (or could learn) the skills needed to create the 5X game I’ve always wanted to play, which became Imperia. As I continued to work on it, I wanted feedback, so I posted the game to a few forums. Interest grew, and as the game went through version .2, then .3, and .4, more and more people jumped on, to the point where there are thousands of hits a week when I post new info.

With the addition of Pavlos and the creation of the awesome community, I had to at least consider what, if anything, I wanted to do with Imperia. Does it stay a hobby, or do I try to make it fly, follow my dream, and create the game I’ve always wanted – but with more resources?

After much thought, prayer, conversation, and trepidation, I’ve decided to jump into the icy pool: I will rebuild Imperia from the ground up and sell it.

What does this mean to you? First, I will release .414 shortly. It has a lot of bug fixes and is very playable at this point, if obviously incomplete. Future VB version releases of Imperia will always be free. I will continue to ‘noodle’ on the VB version of Imperia for ideas and to quickly test out certain parameters as I work though getting up to speed with my new development system.

Which is what, Steve? Well… glad you asked. I’m going all the way with Unity 5 and C# scripting. This change will allow many benefits:

  • Universal compatibility – there will be builds for Windows, Mac, and Linux
  • Resolution issues will be markedly reduced
  • The engine is more stable and much more supported at this point
  • Install dependencies are now much more integrated – one click install, with the flexibility of a full install program
  • Better memory management
  • Fonts won’t suck :-D
  • Vastly more potential to upgrade the UI – we are designing a ‘holistic’ UI where you never leave the galaxy map – you will ‘zoom’ into provinces (formerly sectors), systems, and planets – all on the same screen, but with different information. I’ve already mocked a prototype and it’s way more beautiful and flexible!

Those are the high points, and I am very excited about having the chance to correct and improve some things about the original Imperia, especially with the interface and some of the complexity of the planet economic system.

Read the rest of his post for additional details and news on the topic.

The Game (.412a) already has a really good Atmosphere and quite a lot systems in place. In its current state everything is about economy, population management and politics where one can already have quite a bit of fun. While Ground Military is already included you cant't do much besides suppress your people.

i would recommend to everyone who thinks that Crusader Kings in Space sounds cool to give it a go + it's FREE right now

I haven't played the latest build yet. My experience with the game is based on a build or two ago at this point.

I will heartily echo the recommendations to fans of CK2 - you will find a lot to love in Imperia.

Hey all! This is Steve, developer of Imperia. We have updated the web site with some new screenshots and some developer blogs by both myself and Pavlos, the art genius behind Imperia's look. We are looking for 2 more alpha testers, to begin probably early next month. If you are interested in a game like this, please register and send me a private message with your contact info. Here's the 'back of the box' description of Imperia:

Humanity is holding on by its fingernails after 2 brutal wars by an alien race rom beyond the quadrant that, having been driven from its blasted solar system by the Xyl, humanity now calls home.

Your empire has been crumbling, and vast provinces have broken away and lost contact with your home planets. You are the last of your line, and none ahead of you can make a true claim to the Terran Throne. Your people are afraid of your inexperience, your viceroys and governors are moving to control, or if that fails, eliminate you, and there are faint signs that the alien threat may be making its push to finish the job it started over an eon ago.

Your one ace in the hole: a psychic ability, carefully hidden by your family for generations, that is stronger than it has ever been in anyone in your family. You are just beginning to understand its uses and power, but guard its secret well, for if anyone discovers your talent too early, you are as good as dead.

Welcome to your empire, kid.

If that sounds at all interesting, check us out at (this is our official website; we will be consolidating the blog and wiki here as well)

Man, I wish I had the patience and (especially) time to be an alpha tester! As it is, I shall have to content myself with simply being a cheerleader for now. This really does look & sound like an amazing project.

Steve-o, don't make the mistake of chewing off more than you can handle.

Don't get burned off and don't become too ambitious.

Most importantly, if you need help, ask for it and/or hire somebody.

Kids out of college would love to work on something like this.

Looks great, awesome concept. Will you search for a publisher?

I understand that a lot of these projects don't go to completion, but I've been working on this for over a year and I have a lot of drive. The key is that I'm not working on it 8 hours a day, but can pace it around my life. As far as help, I have a few people that are helping me with things like art and scripts, and we have a small but active community that gives a lot of feedback and support!

Jim - Not sure yet. We have a few contacts but we want to wait until we have a playable closed beta before making any kind of final decision. We want to present as close to a finished product as possible as opposed to 'theoretical' game design.

Well, I think you have something very good and original here. I hope all comes together for you.

There once was an Amiga 4x game where you had do dabble with different gene lines if I remember correctly:

Your concept vaguely reminded me of this.
