StarDrive 2 - MEGA thread!
Army Pea's StarDrive 2 Sector Zero Let's Play Series:

Our StarDrive 2 Sector Zero Review:

https://explorminate.net/2016/03/30/stardrive-2-sector-zero-review/

Disclaimer: I never played the first game, and even though I am aware of some of the drama that followed it, I don't think I participated in any of it.

So, back to the point.. I saw Devildog's LP for it, and it looked fascinating to me. It reminded me so much of MOO2. More than anything that I've seen in a long time.

So my question is, can we add our own races to the game as minors? do minors even exist in the game?

Minors exist. Probably way cooler than most minors, IMHO. I will highlight them as soon as possible. There are three currently in game and their interaction with you are simple, yet compelling.

And no, you can't add your own races. There is supposed to be about a dozen unique minor races by the time it releases.

Oh, that's too bad. I love adding my own minors. I went nuts doing that with GC2.
Varacka Oct 2, 2014 @ 6:33pm
I am sure you could with mods as they had a ton of mods for sd1

What are the plans to open up modding for Stardrive 2? Is it via text files like Distant Worlds rather than getting into coding?
Varacka Oct 3, 2014 @ 3:54am
I think sd1 was lua based.

Nasarog - you got my attention with that comment about it looking a lot like MoO2!

I have been waiting (somewhat) patiently for a good follow up to Master of Orion 2 since the 1990s. Geez, I am getting old...

@marlowe - you're only as old as you let on. I've been playing videogames for a long time, and my family and spouse accept it... SO back to my original comment... Stardrive 2, at least to me (at the moment), looks a lot like MOO2 and SC3. I love the animated aliens, and the things they say. The game play too. I will keep my eye on it.

I agree it looks interesting. That said it's definitely a game to wait for release and check for reviews and community feedback before purchase. I only pre-order or purchase at release when the developer has a proven track record. In my eyes Stardrive 1 was ordinary at best. But since that was the developers first game there is reason to have hope that Stardrive 2 is much improved based on the videos and approach being taken.

A lot of pre-release game commentary is utter nonsense. Getting excited is great but so long as it doesn't cloud objective commentary.

I have my fingers crossed both for the game at release, long-term support and how the community will be handled.
Nasarog Oct 4, 2014 @ 7:06am
I can understand that. I don't pre-order often anymore. I did for DotE (to support Amplitude) ad well as EL (no regrets there at all), but yea.

I have a steam wishlist, and most games I won't even buy until they are 50% off. it's not a money thing, it's a principle thing. The 50% off mark is usually when the game is in a gold state. At release, most if not all games are in a public beta. I am pretty sure that many won't agree with me, but that's okay. I try my hardest not to tell others how to act or what to buy. I hope, I'd get the same in return.

Understandable. Me personally, i loved Stardrive 1. Yes, it had lots fo flaws, but somehow it just hit the major right chords with me. I think the insane ship designing + the ability to see the module layout in combat, how it performs, was major in thaty regard. Also the fact that AI on highest difficulty wasnt easy to beat. Yes it had "cheating" bonuses to achieve that, but so what? The result was achieved, i had to push myself hard to achieve Galactic dominance:).So many current strategy games cant achieve it.

I have become very excited about this game. Thanks for doing the videos, DD.

Personally I loved Stardrive 1 but i will never buy games made by Zero again nor will i buy Stardrive 2.

The reason why is because Zero just left the peope who bought his Stardrive 1 out to dry, he never continued to fix the major bugs in Stardrive 1, in fact Stardrive 1 was never a finished product and instead of finishing the story and special aliens you met, he just removed it completely when he updated game, so he took away features in game instead of finishing it. When he started working on Stardrive 2 he just forgot about all the Stardrive 1 clients and the bugs they were still facing that broke the game. This for me is a deal breaker and helps me decide if i continue to support the people (in this case person) who made their game and future games. I could never play any bigger than normal universe and mid to late game the CTD's started to happen because of "Out of Memory" errors. I have 16GB of dominator gaming ram and have more than enough memory and still Zero just moved on instead of fixing the bugs and complete the story that WAS in the game.

It is very important for me for developer to finish their game first before launching it or moving on, to continue to update game if there are still major bugs in the game, to show he cares for his customers who invested in him etc.

So no Stardrive 2 or any other game from Zero until i see he starts supporting his games and the customers before moving on. Only time will tell.

In fact if Zero wants to make up for the problems, bugs, story removed and unfinished Stardrive, he should actually give a free copy of Stardrive 2 to his loyal Stardrive 1 clients who invested in him. That way he will show he cares and makes up for Stardrive 1 and then clients like me would stick to Zero because he cares.

If not free at least at a very good discounted price, like say 50% of normal price for Stardrive 2.

@gerladkr - that's interesting. I never played the first game because of all of the heat I heard about from the community, but after seeing all the game play from devildog, I'm looking forward to the second game. Just playing devil's advocate here, but what if the removed content from the first game in implemented smoothly into the second game and the discount that you early adopters get isn't 50% off, but more like 25% off. Would you consider it then?
WollieG Oct 9, 2014 @ 5:13am
The fact is that the content was part of first game but not complete, promises were made to finish it which never happened and then removed from game. And that content is not part of the bugs i mentioned like the "Out of memory" bug every 10 min onwards especially mid to late game which most of the time you never finish the game because you get fed up with the OOM crashes. Could never play bigger than normal universe, so lost out on huge universe because OOM crashes was even more on huge universe (all choices above normal).

I would still think 50% is more than fair for Stardrive 1 owners who went thru this process and never got bugs resolved, content removed etc.

What concerns and worries me more is will Stardrive 2 get abandoned just as quick as Stardrive 1 when bugs was not fixed etc. The track record speaks for itself.
I support developers way more and will stick with them if they stick with their clients and try to fix their mistakes and bugs and not just move on to next game.

Rome 2 Total War is excellent example, yes there were major bugs and people were unhappy and did Creative Assembly just move on to next game, NO they did not, they gave their clients free DLC's to make up for the problems, they patch regularly to address client issues, they still actively patching and updating game and just the other day all Rome 2 Total War clients got free Emperor Edition with new full Campaign, major patch etc ABSOLUTELY FREE, again saying sorry and keeping their clients. Now this is a company i will keep on supporting because they did not leave clients hanging with incomplete game full of bugs. And they still patching and updating the game even now. Mod community alive and tons of mods with Steam Workshop.

Now it does not matter if your one person or group of people developing a game, finish what you did first (finish the game as promised), fix the major bugs like OOM first and then move on to next game. If you cannot do this then you should not be developing games and taking peoples money.

Trust me when i say Stardrive 1 is one of my favourites and a jewel but this jewel was never polished and cut to shine that it could have been. I just cannot keep on supporting someone when they just move on and leave us with problems.

This is my experience and feelings around how clients were handled with Stardrive 1 and i am not speaking for anyone else but i know that there are loads of Stardrive 1 clients unhappy on how the game was just abandoned, I just took the time and was not affraid to raise my experience i had with supporting Stardrive 1 and this is the reason why i would not support Stardrive 2. I am not paying full price again for a game that could go the same route as Stardrive 1.

@geraldkr - I certainly understand where you're coming from. I always say, talk with your wallet. I seldom buy games at release. In the past year I've bought 3 ealy access candidates. Endless Legend, Godis and Plague INC.

Endless Legend rocks, but I knew it would, even though it still needs lots of work.
Plague INC is exactly what I thought it would be. It's fun, but kind of grim, especially now.
Godus is garbage. Plain and simple.

So, I understand where you are coming from.
