Wow. If this is a legitimate thing and not a hoax, I'll be head-over-heels for it. Fingers crossed!

Agreed on DW. It's a damn fine game, but it doesn't have the same emphasis on rich political and diplomatic tapestry you find in CK or EU. Really, no one does that anywhere near as well as Paradox, which has the advantage of decades of work into its engines and systems.

If this is real, it makes me wonder if at some point you'll be able to start a game of CK II and play the same file all the way through the space age. ;)

You'll be given credit in WeX #40. Nice catch.

Thank you!

Holy. Shit. Where is this from?

Must be a Gamescom announcement..

OMGWTF this looks stupendous.

I think I'm shaking all over…

This is definitely exciting just in that it's Paradox doing its thing but IN SPACE. But on top of that, I think this is a really rare opportunity for a stuido to come in and challenge the conventions and boundaries of space 4X. In its own way, Distant Worlds did the same thing in 2010, but CodeForce and Matrix didn't have (to my knowledge) anything near the level of respect and credibility that Paradox has in the strategy genre. That social capital puts them in a great position to shake up a genre that really, really needs some good shaking.

So, what do we see on screens?

The game is realtime, like DW (see upper right corner).
The space is seamle^Wscratch that, it's starlane-based.
However, there are no special instances for battles in-system, again, like DW.
While there are special civilian construction ships, something interesting goes on with science ships.
They not only survey planets like in Horizon, there's a changeable scientist in them and the risk of failure of a discovery.

All in all, seems like they're aiming at DW crowd, so we can expect Paradox's trademark complexity in a seemingly neat UI.

I really enjoy the grand strategy titles that Paradox produces, though space/scifi is the go-to setting for me. About time they stepped out of the historical field for once and tried to take their grand strategy onto a galactic scale. It should be interesting to see how they handle the battles and multiplayer.

This could be the first Grand Strategy Space Game? (as far as I know while Paradox games do fit into 4x, they are in their own genre?).

i'm mildly hopeful

paradox usually has incredibly bloated designs because they try to simulate a ton of history

if they have to invent a bunch of sci-fi stuff, hopefully there's less to simulate and they can keep the design focused and relevant to making interesting decisions

I'm hoping there's really fun combat... but then again they usually don't do that.

I'm going to guess it all depends on whether the game is singleplayer only, or multiplayer.
If it is singleplayer great combat is manageable,if it is multiplayer combat will be a drag since I'm quite certain other players would not want to wait 10-30 minutes for combat to play out. That is, if you want in depth combat.

If combat is similar to the previous games, they might make it a number vs number popup, but perhaps with the amount of variables such as space admiral-space weather conditions-experience of units- etc...(similar to what Hearts Of Iron 3 has).

In this case , they get to be creative with all their they probably are optimizing the complexity so their simulation can run its course. Their engine can do quite impressive stuff though.

Holy cow. Super stoked for this. I love Paradox games, they're probably my favorite 4X(sort of 4x anyways). EUIV I think is outstanding, can't wait to see how this turns out.

I'm pretty excited about it except for one thing... 100's of DLC? I hope not. But then again, there is the 75% off sale... so....
