Two new reviews are up! - Eternal Dreams: Poker RPG & Joker Madness (Mixed recommendation, 6.5/10))

Quick note: Due to personal stuff, I might not have the time to prepare a review for the next weekend.

The good news is that we received quite a few games to review this week. The bad news is that...most weren't good.

With two of the games we bounced off so hard, we decided not to give them more time for a full review.

Genkai: Primal Awakening just had poor interface that we couldn't go past by. The environmental obstacles were literally in the way of seeing the character and the controls were awkward.

Soul Monsters Card Game starts off in the non-English language and the card text was so tiny it was unreadable.

The other two games, Eternal Dreams: Poker RPG and Joker Madness (EA), got Mixed recommendation, 6.5/10. They didn't have a strong enough gameplay loop to keep attention past the few hours. Still, unlike the first two, they are at least playable and have some redeeming qualities - Eternal Dreams is a coherent experience and Joker Madness has some unique ideas. if you somehow exhausted your list of games to play, they might be worth a look, otherwise, there are other games you should try out first.

It's been a while since we covered a digital adaptation of a board game, so here it is.

Yellow & Yangtze is all about map control and because most components are not player controlled, it's all about fighting over the best point-generation setups and 'stealing' them from other players. Because only the lowest resource is scored, it keeps the game dynamic as players keep switching their focus throughout the match.

It has quite a few unique rules and mechanics, so it might take a few games to learn all the rules, but the tutorial is thankfully very good.

Recommended, 7.5/10.

Quick note: Due to work travel, there won't be a new review next week, but after that we should get back out our usual weekly schedule.

This week though we took a look at small puzzle game with cards - Golf Peaks.

Move the ball to the hole by using cards and (mostly) fling it in the right direction. Simple, but addicting. Great tutorial for each new mechanic introduced and the puzzles aren't overly difficult.

More of a puzzle than a card game, but still recommended, 7.5/10.

The RLDB formula has been implemented into many classic card games. This game tries it with simple Pairs, the classic card matching mechanic.

To be honest, it's better than expected and is fun for a while, but it doesn't solve its high memory dependence and is rather low on content. Still, fun for a while and could be good to train focus.

Recommended, 7/10

After covering a big release last week, we wanted to review a lesser known indie game. We didn't quite end up liking it, so we tried yet out another indie - unfortunately to the same result. Unfortunately, this week there are no positive recommendations.

Endstation is a dice game (based on Farkle) with a cool (but ultimately untapped) environment, but lacks any strategic depth or luck mitigation. Not recommended, 6/10

Dominance is a TD, deckbuilding hybrid that has you (re)build your deck each battle, but sadly is too low on content and, as a result, gets repetitive quickly. For whatever reason, Steam doesn't allow me to add it to the curator page *shrug*.
Not recommended, 5/10

The most anticipated card game of the year has finally entered early access. Of course we are talking about none other than Slay the Spire 2.

After dozens of runs, we can safely say that StS manages to capture the essence of what maid StS great while expanding on the formula through slight tweaks and lots of new content.

Outside of new characters, cards and relics (alongside old ones), the game has healthier and more fun design, without the usual punishment involved.

For example the boss relics have been replaced with rewards that either don't have a downside or a far less punishing ones. Bad events are far less frequent and generally more fun. There is no Time Eater-like ability (as of yet).

There is still room of improvement on the UX side - like a faster way to see upgraded cards or official support for restarting fights.

Otherwise, StS 2 is shaping up to be the definite version of StS, and already has more content in EA than StS.

Royally approved, 9/10 (potentially 10/10 after EA)

StS has been an inspiration to many deckbuilders, but Balatro might just be a close second.

Rummy Odyssey combines some Rummy scoring with Balatro-like mechanics, and the results is a game that is too heavy for casuals but too strategy light for veterans.

Unfortunately, Not recommended, 6/10.

We occasionally dive into free games as they tend to be more experimental.

Deck of Delirium is sort of a safe experiment that doesn't try anything too crazy (in contrast to its insanity mechanic), but introduces some ideas (like promote mechanic) that could really work in a more fleshed out game. Being a free game means it doesn't have that much content and the animations are too slow. Otherwise, decent enough to try for a few hours.

Recommended, 7/10.

We had gods do the dirty work, in this army builder, autobattler.

Gods vs Horrors delivers on the simple promise of drafting an army, positioning it well and let the deterministic AI take over. Combos feel decent, even though they are not as bombastic and often take time go come online.

Recommended, 7/10.

We played two games this week - Aliosso and 21 Dungeons.

Aliosso takes a lot of notes from Balatro and while in essence they are very similar, it doesn't stop it from being fun to play (in fact, it helps). It's fun to build the combo engine and the runs are quick. Recommended, 7.5/10

21 Dungeons, on the other hand, is a game we couldn't recommend. It's a blackjack thrown into a roguelite mode without much modification or luck mitigation. Not recommended, 4/10.
