Very high ram usage with new library beta.
I love the new library so far but one problem I noticed is after browsing a library for awhile Steam use over 800MB ram. Normaly it would peak around 100MB max. My PC have only 8GB ram so this is a serious problem and its affecting games performance.

Yes, I dislike this enormous growth in RAM usage too. I'm afraid they won't optimize this at all.
Yeah, I've noticed that too.

This seems like a good excuse to get more ram... :D

16GB ram is the new 8

It really is hogging so much RAM, and it is so slow... I can't fathom why it needs so many resources :/

My guess is a leak or some sort, my Steam only asks for about 40-60 MB of my RAM.

That's probably because you forgot to check the background processes. That's when you notice that there are 6 more "steam client webhelper" processes running. You have to add all that to the RAM usage of the main steam client bootstrapper. And of course there's also the steam client service. Although that one hasn't changed its usage.

Edit: Even the Steam friends list has its own process now... Good grief.

On Linux, it seems with some games, such as Crusader Kings II, the steamwebhelper executable grabs all available memory, including swap – it does not matter if you 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB or even more, it will just grab it all. This makes the game unplayable, since the machine comes to a full stop after a few minutes. Not good.

Yeah this is bascially ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥... What you are talking about is the Steam Client Bootstrapper task which basically is the executable that executes the necessarry executables...
Scroll down a bit...

In 2019... definately. 8 is fairly doable as long as you know how but for the better lifequality you might want to finally upgrade

It's more like 500 more.

How is it possible that ram use increases if you toggle low performance low bandwidth mode and small interface elements? Isnt that ass backwards? Just moving the scroll bar has made the memory use sit at over 1 gig of useage. That's pretty disgusting. All I want from a client is to start my game. Not act like a game running in the background sucking up endless amounts of memory. Why does steam not go into low performance mode like the epic client does when a game starts?

10x more ram than any other client? Wth?? More ram than all of them combined??

The windows clock could use 4gb ram tomorrow. And that means you should get 32gb ram......
Or did i misunderstand you?

Definitely make sure you restart Steam once in a while with this update. It's definitely got some kind of run away memory leak going on or something. I imagine they'll be plugging that and optimizing more before this is release. I like the new sorting features and such but there's no way they can take this to release build with the current performance issues. Also for anyone having some speed issues in your library consider checking if GPU acceleration is turned on for web views in the settings, it often seems to default to off.

Because it's now www in a wrapper. Enjoy your downgrade in every possible aspect that will be praised by people because it looks "nice". "Electron programs" era can piss off.

Where did small mode go? I don't know why they removed it. In another thread somebody said turning off GPU acceleration fixes the high RAM use, however I am not testing this out it slows down everything alot.
