Run steam
Steam crashes
Run steam with i956 drivers (env MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=i965 steam)
Steam runs

RESULTS
I’m taken to a game page on the store, but it’s blank.

EXPECTED
The Left 4 Dead 2 store page details should be displayed.

I have the same problem here, and the same workaround fixes it. Dell XPS 13 9350.

I resolved this by uninstalling old (and buggy) Intel display drivers. They were causing problems even though they were apparently not enabled.

It's possible that's my problem, since I upgraded from Ubuntu 18.04. Do you remember what package you had to remove?

Okay, I found my problem. I had some xorg.conf fragment containing the following:

Section "Device"
   Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
   Driver      "intel"
   Option      "TearFree" "true"
EndSection

I removed this (and restarted X) and Steam starts okay now.
