Defining "indie" has never been easy, ever since the word started getting used (circa 2000 or so?) As it's exploded, it's not gotten any easier. It's an inclusive term, rather than an exclusive one, so it covers some wide territory. Here, I break indies into a few different categories - all of which are very indie, but operate very differently:
