Server Rules (Full Version)
This is the full version of our rules. If you want to see the 'TL;DR' version, you can read them here

We want all players to have fun on our servers and we have many plugins to make being on our servers enjoyable.
We have these rules in place to ensure that everyone can have fun, not to stop you from having fun. We try to be as fair as possible but we do have to limit what players can do.

Outlined below are all the general rules that apply to all servers, and the server specific rules that apply only to the specified servers. The reasons for each rule are explained to make them as clear as possible.

If you have a question or suggestion about any of the rules below then feel free to ask an admin directly or leave a comment below, but ultimately these are decided by the admins and their word is still always law. Otherwise if you don't agree with these rules we suggest you find some different servers to play on.

General Rules
Be Polite
  • At the basic level, all we ask is that players are not rude to others. You may not like what others are doing, but being rude will not solve the problem.
  • Everyone has a right to their point of view, but that does not mean that you have the right to insult other players because they like or dislike something you disagree with.
  • We never ban players for what they believe (about anything), but we will ban if players if they start causing offence to others.
    • For example, this means you are free to say that you don't like "My Little Pony" and/or "Bronies." That's an opinion and you're entitled to it. But calling all Bronies f*gs will not be tolerated.
  • It does not matter if you did or didn’t use swear/curse words, saying something with the intent to cause offence will not be tolerated.
  • We have a word filter to remove a selection of words we feel are offensive and are not acceptable under any circumstance.
Avoid excessive swearing
  • A little swearing is OK in context and moderation. We all are guilty of the odd occasional swear word but spamming the chat box or voice chat will get you gagged/muted.
  • If you're being really offensive to others we will kick or even ban.
No Racism / Sexism / Homophobia / Other
  • There are certain subjects that do not ever have a place on a gaming server.
  • This includes expressing those ideas though text chat, voice chat, micspam or sprays.
  • This is a short list of definitions for different subjects we might ban for. Included with each is a couple examples of comments that people might encounter:
    • Racism - Making insulting comments about a person (or group of people) based on their home country, skin colour, or language.
      • IE: All black people are thieves.
      • Russian players are hackers
    • Sexism - Making insulting comments about a person (or group of people) based on their gender.
      • IE: Women belong in the kitchen.
      • IE: Girl gamers are attention whores
    • Sexuality - Making insulting comments about a person or group of people) based on their sexual orientation. This applies to both homosexual and heterosexual people equally. We list this as 'Homophobia' on the ban reason as the vast majority of bans in this category are for comments against gay men.
      • IE: Gay people are faggots
      • IE: Lesbians should be hung
    • Intellectual Ability - Making insulting comments about a person or group of people) based on their apparent intellectual ability. This includes accusing a person of having a given condition with the implication that having said given condition is 'bad/wrong' or makes that person 'a bad person'.
      • IE: Men who like MLP are Autistic
      • IE: "Your a retard if you like ........."
    • Other - This is not a definitive list of reasons or examples. If the admins feel that you are actively trying to insult or degrade another player or group of people, then we will take action against you.
Micspam is allowed
  • Micspam is allowed on all GmT servers. If you do not like the micspam you hear, open your main menu and select the 'Ear' button located at the top left. Select the player you want to mute and press OK.
  • Admins may still mute you server wide if your micspam is deemed too offensive or annoying.
  • Miscpamming over another player who is also micspamming is frowned upon. Please wait until the current micspammer has finished.
  • Please do not spam for too long. Allow other players to play their micspam to that everyone gets a fair turn.
Sprays
The following types of sprays are not allowed:
  • Porn sprays. If in doubt, avoid anything with more adult themes.
  • Gore sprays
  • Pictures from shock-sites (IE Goatsee, tubgirl, lemonparty, meatspin, etc)
  • Racist, Homophobic or other derogatory sprays
Speaking English
  • Nobody has to speak English. Players can use what ever language they like.
  • We ask everyone to at least try to use English where they can because it is a commonly known language.
  • HOWEVER we run UK based servers and the main language among the admins is English.
Avoiding Votekick / Voteban
  • If for whatever reason an admin starts a votekick or voteban against a player and that player leaves during the vote, they will get automatically banned.
  • The ban for avoiding a vote is 3 hours, where as the voteban length is only 30 minutes.
!call / !report abuse
  • !call and !report exist so that players can report players that are breaking server rules to the admins.
  • Using either command to falsely report another player will result in you being kicked or banned from the servers.
    • On the Strange servers, you may be banned from joining red team and banned from using !call for 3 hours. This is so you may continue being useful on the server, but prevent you from upgrading your own strange weapons.
  • !calls sent to us look like this:
GmT Report BOT: New report on server: [!!] 24/7 Bot Farming - http://www.GmodTech.net [!!] (81.19.212.44:27010) Reporter: PLAYER 1 (STEAM_0:1:xxxxxxxxx) Target: PLAYER 2 (STEAM_0:0:xxxxxxxxx) Reason: Random Deathmatching Join server: steam://connect/81.19.212.44:27010
  • Counter-calling tends to be ignored, though we may decide to kick or ban players. This is when a player calls to report a player who had just reported them. To use the example above, this would be Player 2 trying to use !call against Player 1.
  • If a player receives 3 or more !call abuse bans, they will be permanently banned from using the command.
No Blank / Un-Typeable Names
  • Using blank names or with symbols that admins and other players would be unable to type out are forbidden.
  • As these blank names are commonly used by hackers to prevent them being reported, we treat players with blank names like hackers and will permanently ban them on the spot.
  • Players may be unbanned if they return to using a type-able name
Valve Rules = Our Rules
  • Any rule that Valve has in place will be enforced on our servers.
  • This includes a ban on the use of Aimbots, Wallhack or any other cheating software.
Donor Status, Admin powers and Abuse
  • All the rules on this page apply to everyone equally, including donors.
  • If we find evidence that a donor has used their powers to help break server rules (such as using godmode to kill or not be killed) the ban will be a minimum of 3 days.
  • Repeated bans for Donor Abuse WILL result in all powers being removed and your donation will not be refunded.
  • Abusable actions include:
    • Noclipping into bot-rooms and swapping the bots, changing team or destroying sentries
    • Giving bots god mode or making them un-killable
    • Moving bots away from where they should be.
    • This is not a definitive list of abusive actions. If an admin thinks what you are doing is abusive they can and will still ban you.
  • Donors have admin powers but are NOT admins. You must NOT charge items for powers. Offering powers such as !noclip or !god in exchange for metal, hats or other items is forbidden.
Do not pretend to be an admin
  • All of our admins have the word 'Admin' somewhere in their tag. They are also listed on this steam group.
  • Donors are not admins. They have access to some that are normally admin only, but they are not admins. Donors cannot kick or ban other players.
  • Pretending to be an admin will result in a 1 day ban
  • Just to be clear though, saying you will contact an admin or can have a person banned is allowable, just don't say that you personally will ban or kick them.
Botfarm Server rules
No Deathmatching or stopping achievements
  • The Botfarm server is for gaining achievements, not deathmatching.
  • The bots are provided to gain achievements. If you cannot get the achievement you need using the bots, ask other players to help you.
  • Attacking other players or interfering with what they are doing without asking so you can get an achievement is still random killing/disruption.
  • Some player duel on these servers. Just because they are fighting does not mean you may join in. If you kill players without their permission you may be kicked or banned.
  • Getting revenge for kills also not allowed. More often than not it just makes things worse.
  • If someone is killing you, stay in a safe area (like spawns) and report to an admin.
  • IF IN DOUBT - If they haven't said its OK to do so, leave them alone!
Avoiding Jail
  • Admins may jail a players as a first warning. It's nicer than being kicked because you don't lose your spot on the server and we have a chance to talk to you.
  • This is beaten by a player leaving and rejoining. If we see you do this, you will be re-jailed when you get back into the server. Repeatedly trying to avoid jail will get you banned right away.
Strange Servers rules
Red team is only for players with strange weapons
  • You will only be allowed on the Red team if you have a strange weapon equipped.
  • Players without a strange weapon equipped will be automatically sent to blue team.
  • We cannot use bots for strange weapons as do not work on bots. This was a deliberate choice by Valve.
  • Players who repeatedly join red without a strange weapon may be banned from red team completely.
Offering to idle for items is allowed
  • Offering to join blue in exchange for item so that others kill you is allowed but is not supported by the admin staff and users trade at their own risk.
  • If a player does not want to trade, or does not have any items to trade with then they do not have to. Nobody has to accept any trade they do not want to.
  • However it can be extremely easy to scam players in this this way. The admins can't patrol this server 24/7 and won't get involved in trades gone wrong.
  • We cannot alter, interfere with, or reverse trades. That is some thing only Valve can do, and they already provide more than enough systems to prevent being scammed.
  • If you are scammed by another player while on our server, we can not help you.
Selling access to lanes is NOT allowed
  • We define selling access as "asking for items in order to get access to a blue player that is NOT the player traded with - IE: Player A (red) selling access to Player B (red) so Player B (red) can kill Player C (blue).
  • If a RED player is selling access to a lane that has a blue player in, they may be kicked or banned.
  • Report players who do this with the !call and !report commands
No blues are allowed in red areas
  • Escaped blues found in red areas will be banned on the spot.
  • Red players who assist blue players in escaping may also be banned.
Hotel Server rules
No Random Deathmatching
  • The Hotel server is a roleplay server. Killing others is not the point of this server.
  • Attacking other players or interfering with what they are doing without asking is not allowed.
Nobody 'owns' rooms
  • Many players will pretend that they are staying in one of hotel rooms and will claim it.
  • There are no locks on the rooms! Claiming a room does not prevent other players walking in.
  • The suggested (but not enforced) practice is to put your spray above or beside the door to your room to mark that it is the one you are using.
  • While no one can properly 'own' a room, deliberately staying in or re-entering another players room after they have asked you to leave may be considered trolling by the admins, which could see you kicked or banned.
Do not block doors / Prevent others from moving around
  • The whole map is open to all players. Do not try to prevent other players from accessing part of the map by standing in a doorway
  • If someone is in your way, ask them to move. Do not airblast them out of the way.
  • Sometimes people accidentally block doors because someone/something else is blocking them. Be patient and let them move when they can.
  • If they refuse to move after you have asked them, use !call.
If you have a question or suggestion about any of the rules below then feel free to ask or leave a comment, but ultimately these are decided by the admins and their word is still always law.

Updated thread:
  • Clarified section on "Deathrun - No Freeruns"
  • Expanded entry regarding killing on surf
  • Added section about Donor Abuse
New section:

Do not pretend to be an admin
  • All of our admins have the word 'Admin' somewhere in their tag. They are also listed on this steam group.
  • Donors are not admins. They have access to some that are normally admin only, but they are not admins. Donors cannot kick or ban other players.

I have made a small number of changes to the rules, mostly to update them with relevant information. These are the changed or new sections:

General Rules

Updated the phrasing of the Botfarm section to reflect that we no longer have the Factory server.

Corrected the Surf server rules to remove comments about the !friendly plugin
Updated the general rules section to specifically outline and expand upon the 'No Racism / Sexism / Homophobia / Other' rule.

No Racism / Sexism / Homophobia / Other
  • There are certain subjects that do not ever have a place on a gaming server.

Everything in context and moderation. Racist jokes can be funny, but racism is not. If the admins think you're being deliberately offensive for the sake of being offensive, then expect them to remove you.

so i was curoius is that when you sell kills isnt that techniqly selling lanes since one idler and one killer can go in and the gate is lock so no other players get in. this rule a bit counfusing

'Selling lanes' more often means "Selling access to lanes." By this we mean a red player stood in a lane that has a blue player, but instead of killing that red themselves, they ask other people for items so they can be let in. Before we added the assist lane in V3, people would often offer to let medics into the lanes for a fee.

The problem with trying to sell a lane is that you can't control who gets in and who doesn't. If you're talking in open chat, everyone can see that you might be trying to sell (for example) Lane 8, so everyone waits outside lane 8. As soon as the doors open, everyone rushes in. Even if someone had paid for the lane, there is no way to ensure that only they get in.

The other problem people face is that many people join the server with an alt account. They make the alt account join blue so they can farm off it. They could sell access to the lane it's in, then make the alt leave the server, or change it's lane. Unless the alt has a name similar to their main account, no one knows that it's an alt account. Only I can check if someone is possibly using an alt by checking the logs to see if 2 accounts joined the server from the same IP address.

Now I'll be honest here. If we could block trading happening on the strange servers, we would. There are just too many risks and places where people can scam each other on the strange servers that it would probably be safer to ban trading completely. But we can't do that, and as we have to say every time trading is brought up, We cannot alter, interfere with, or reverse trades. That is some thing only Valve can do, and they already provide more than enough systems to prevent being scammed.

As we can't ban trading, the next best option is to try and make it as safe as possible. That's why we have the SteamRep and Backpack plugins. That's why there a clock in the top left-hand side of the screen. And it's why we introduced a recommended trade rate of 1 scrap for 30 minutes, to try combat the people who ask for high offers.

When you are trading with a person to kill them directly, the best thing to do ask them confirm in the trade chat window what it is you are trading for (IE: You are paying them 1 scrap for 30 minutes of them being on blue) then take a screenshot of it. Confirm the trade as usual.

If that person then leaves the server early, you can send us a ban submission[gmodtech.net] with the screenshots included. On the ban submission page is an 'Upload a demo' option. All you need to do is save the screenshots into a .rar or .zip folder, then upload that folder to the ban submission. FYI in case you didn't know, On windows you can right-click on the picture you want to send, scroll down to the 'Send to' option and select 'Compressed (zipped) folder'.

When we receive it, we can check the logs to see when they joined and left the server. If we can see that (for example) you agreed to a trade at 11:00am for 30 minutes killing, but they left the server at 11:03am, then we can know that they scammed you out of the items and we can ban them from the servers. This is why we need the screenshots as we can't see the chat in a trade window.
Updated the intro section to point readers to the shorted, 'TL;DR' version of the rules. This is a copy of this thread with 90% of the explanations removed.

Updated the Hotel server rules to include about blocking doors:

Do not block doors / Prevent others from moving around
  • The whole map is open to all players. Do not try to prevent other players from accessing part of the map by standing in a doorway
  • If someone is in your way, ask them to move. Do not airblast them out of the way.
  • Sometimes people accidentally block doors because someone/something else is blocking them. Be patient and let them move when they can.
  • If they refuse to move after you have asked them, use !call.
Updated the 'Avoid excessive swearing' section to remove references to the word censor pluign.

Updated the Strange server rules section:
Amended the !call abuse rule to add in permanent !call bans:
  • If a player receives 3 or more !call abuse bans, they will be permanently banned from using the command.

If you have a complaint about a specific admin or situation then feel free to let me know. Chat and command logs exist for a reason. But a vague "admins are abusive" doesn't help me fix that.

But regarding the issue of owning rooms on the Hotel servers, here's the relevant rule:
Nobody 'owns' rooms
  • Many players will pretend that they are staying in one of hotel rooms and will claim it.
  • There are no locks on the rooms! Claiming a room does not prevent other players walking in.
  • The suggested (but not enforced) practice is to put your spray above or beside the door to your room to mark that it is the one you are using.
  • While no one can properly 'own' a room, deliberately staying in or re-entering another players room after they have asked you to leave may be considered trolling by the admins, which could see you kicked or banned.
Note that emphasis was put on the word "may" here. You can't claim a room then go off somewhere else in the map and expect that room to remain empty or still be 'yours'. If you aren't actively using the room, people won't know you're using it. If that happens, an admin may conclude that you had stopped using the room and now someone else is having a turn.
