@qwertyboss your wiki link says "Beta, named after the second letter of the Greek alphabet, is the software development phase following alpha. It GENERALLY begins when the software is feature complete." hmmm so this game doesnt fall into that general catagory. Thank you for your self defeating feedback though.

Well loaded it up, had some conflicts with steam, but resolved. Long time fan of series. Yea a bit much, but think I was glad I got an early look at it, graphics are great, turn based is fine, i prefer that. Tech tree looks similar, but I like the new techs i have seen so far. really looking forward to seeing the game improve. hope there is an auto jump to battles in finial product.

Game has a strong alpha framework. Gonna be a bit before this is polished but when it is, gonna be a must have.

I believe the complaints are less about the direction of the game, and more about the communication from the developer. The Aug 2014 release is a late alpha release at best, and should not have been billed as "beta." This is not really opinion-based, as the difference between alpha and beta releases are well-defined in software life cycle literature. Take a look at this (for one example):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle

The game looks AMAZING , but communicating it as a "beta" was poor form and heightened expectations far beyond what developers are delivering at this point.

"If you are complaining about paying for testing remember that they don't have to give anyone access. Many games are run on a lottery beta or private/invite beta. They are giving you the option to purchase access if you would like too. If you don't want to get the beta then wait."

This. I wouldn't dream of paying for early access unless it was significantly (>50%) cheaper than the final product would be.

Clearly this is Beta. It is beta because the Developers say it is. Clear enough, It also states that the Beta is not feature complete, reading for the win. Game is even more amazing than it was in Alpha. I definitely recommend this game now! Diplomacy will be in in October, can't wait!

Why are so many people complaining, did you not read the game's store page? (http://store.steampowered.com/app/226860/) It clearly states that the game is currently a Beta Version and that it is also an incomplete work in progress which is currently forecast to be released in April 2015, also you're not paying for just the beta, when the game is officially released you do not need to pay anything more in order to keep playing indefinitely, just think of this as a pre-order and the beta participation as a perk for you pre-launch purchase.

You people, and i use the word "people" loosely, really need to stop trying to bully game companies because they're not giving you hand outs, if you want a hand out then please let me direct you to your local welfare office or soup kitchen and quit being a bunch of ungrateful trolls!
