To answer your question, the Northern Extinction caused major population loss in the northern part of the eastern hemisphere (Russia and the northern European nations) as a result of the accidental return of flesh-eating zombies from a Russian colony on Mars. A large part of the "extinction" was actually an emergency southward migration rather than actual death and the infestation was eventually brought under control, but it resulted in significant population changes and changes to the borders of many nations.

It remains unclear whether the virus was some sort of still-undiscovered Martian life form, a Russian experiment gone wrong (conspiracy theorists hold that Russians deliberately conducted dangerous epigenetic experiments on Mars in a failed attempt at a robust quarantine), or a deliberate sabotage by one of Russia's longtime enemies, such as the USA, which had not yet been
wiped out by the Yellowstone supervolcano .

Spoiler Alert: Don't look at this if you haven't seen the Earth History Center Dialouge.

I've been on the wiki for Aven Colony, and I've seen some of the quotes from the Earth History Center. What happened during the Northern Extiction, and what happened afterward?
