Unlike the rest of the community who seems to be composed of kicking and screeching children, I will say that undermeshing is a problem, but there is a way to fix it. I'm by no means a game design expert, but I do think that my solution is plausible. If you are against killboxes, which is what I understood from part of the article, add a teleportation undermesh, so that whenever somebody gets within a certain range, it will teleport them up a certain level. I believe @Sexually Active Toyota Pruis had a similar idea. Another idea, and I'm not sure if this would work, is having a mesh within a mesh situation. I'm not sure how physics engines would react to that, and I'm not sure the toll it would take on the overall experience, but it is an idea.

There is a silver bullet to climbing picks and undermeshing, just DELETE CLIMBING PICKS, they don't have any positives what so ever compared to the downside in you LETTING PLAYERS MESH. "there is no silver bullet to solving meshing" just delete the ♥♥♥♥ing climbing picks its incredibly simple. You have to be incredibly daft not to see that, climbing picks are the most common method for meshing and the easiest to solve, pull your head out your asses and fix it.

One other suggestion is making an undermesh that is slightly under the map that automatically teleports the player back up to the surface above where they fell or a little bit off. Something like a foot under the map that would just teleport the player a foot up and maybe an inch to the right (to avoid falling through again) would help maybe (although it would have to work where it couldn't be used itself to glitch into areas that the player shouldn't be in or in someone else's base).

Could you by any chance make the whole landscape a mesh (or a bunch for level streaming) and then extend a box with sides and a bottom beneath it to try to make the general terrain more solid?

There IS a silver bullet to undermeshing. And it is a very simple one that requires ZERO coding. The solution is active enforcement teams (AET) with discord that can respond to 911 alerts 24/7 just like on the conquest servers. This requires spending money on man hours. It is up to the players to recruit people into their tribes to have a around the clock presence in game (not an easy task I know) and it up to the AET to respond quickly to steam/VAC/ARK ban undermeshers then submit a request to GMs for server reverts and Dev wipes of tribes who benefited from the hackers.
