Hey, glad to see a wholesome thread. I was a bit late to the whole Fate/Nasu series, as I always heard it was a bit of a hurdle to get into. I took the plunge and read through OG Tsukihime last year and had been on a series kick since. I am eagerly awaiting the Tsukihime Other Side of Red Garden release to experience maid twin supremacy all over again.

I picked up hollow ataraxia but I haven't had a ton of free time the past couple days to start. Once I finish that I plan to go through more of the animes (Sadly I am most excited for Cooking with the Emiya Family, I'm that kind of degenerate, I know). I had watched Fate/Zero after finishing F/SN VN, and dabble in the anime adaptations of Stay Night a little at a time to see how they adapted it. I watched Garden of Sinners as well, though I didn't bother with Tsukihime anime since its reputation sorta proceeded it.

I read the og tsukihime and then got the remake on switch but I hated the localisation.

It feels off:

Over-sanitized.
Lacking in nuance.
Missing honorifics, alternative kanji readings, and even some dialogue depth.
Kohaku yelling “Shiki-san!”
It’s not just a name, that “-san” carries tone, social nuance, respect, and a layer of characterization.

But in the official translation, you get:

“Shiki!”

Which completely flattens the meaning. You're just left with a generic exclamation, losing the tone Kohaku often uses, especially when you're already hearing the voice say "Shiki-san!" in crystal-clear Japanese.

In Tsukihime, relationships are everything. Honorifics:

Indicate closeness (or distance),

Reflect how characters view each other,

Often change as character dynamics evolve (e.g., from "-san" to no honorific, or from "-kun" to "-chan").

So removing them? You're ripping out character development in subtle but important ways in a textual level.

This Is Why the Fan Patch Wins:
Fan translators like the Tsukimates English patch is:

Preserve honorifics like "-san", "-kun", "-sama", etc.

Let you feel the texture of character relationships.

Don’t treat the audience like idiots who “can’t understand Japanese culture.”

They trust readers to get it, and if you’re playing Tsukihime, you’re not here for a surface-level script anyway.
The official English translation of Tsukihime, often uses elevated, polished English that leans more toward literary elegance than literal accuracy or character fidelity.
Instead of keeping the nuance, tone, and casual rhythms of the original, the official script sometimes:

Smooths out slang or casual phrasing.

Adds flourishes to make dialogue “flow” better in English.

Drops honorifics and alternate readings (like furigana wordplay).

Adapts emotional outbursts into calmer or more refined expressions.
The whole point of Tsukihime is that it’s personal, messy, and deeply human — whether it's Akiha’s restrained dignity cracking, or Kohaku’s syrupy politeness, or Arcueid’s bratty enthusiasm. The fan TL tries to preserve those voices — the official one often smooths them into something more “presentable” but less distinct.

It's not bad per se, it’s just a stylistic choice that many people dislike.
he Beauty of the Original Tsukihime:
It was janky as hell, outdated visuals, No voice acting, flat music loops, almost no CGs.

It was clearly the product of a few passionate weirdos doing their best with scraps.

But the writing? The atmosphere? The slow dread? The emotional depth?

It hit like a truck.

The Writing Was the Soul
Even with all its flaws:

You got Shiki’s messy inner thoughts, full of anxiety and bloodlust.

You felt the characters’ emotional distance and baggage through their words, not the art.

The pacing let things breathe, letting you sit with horror, confusion, or awkward romantic tension.

It wasn't perfect, but it was honest. It was raw. It was Nasu screaming into a keyboard about knives, human cruelty, who the real monsters are, vampirism, and regret.

The Remake Polished Everything Except What Mattered Most
Art: Stunning

Music: Fully orchestrated

Voices: Top-tier cast

UI: Slick and modern

But the writing, the one thing that didn’t need a face-lift, got treated like an inconvenience.
Refined. Cleaned up. “Localized.”

But that's just my view, I've already done a side by side comparison and the fan patch feels so much better to read. Got it all working in an evening.
