In that case it's most likely an issue with your router. Not all routers support this kind of connection (connect to the public ip from within the LAN). But you should be fine just connecting to your private LAN ip address.
Port forwarding is an option in my router. Even though I forward the correct ports, the ports still don't open. I even put my PC on DMZ and it still didn't work. I tried plugging my PC directly into my modem and it worked, however, it only worked once and hasn't worked again. Do you know what might be the issue here (oh, I also have a static ip).
