Valve has proven time and again that they can innovate though, so I'm sure that they can add their own unique spin on it without making the game a mess.
Sure, there's DOTA 2, which has a bunch of waifu-types (not to insult anyone, but that would be the equivalent of their repping a game with so many chars.), but the other games, while respectable, popular, and perhaps even memorable in their own right, have not had the impact on game history that Smash's characters (and their IPs) have. This is a debatable point at best, but consider also that Steam has only been a gaming platform for ten years, while Nintendo has been around considerably longer (not going to look up actual dates, too lazy) than Valve. Sony even has had a longer lasting effect on the gaming industry as a whole, and they released All-Stars pretty late into the PS3's lifespan.
That said, I think it would be a profitable move for Valve if they were to run it like they do TF 2, with workshop support basically running the game and providing content extraneous to what the devs actually made.
At least I would. I don't care much about Nintendo (raised on Neo-Geo games), but I love Smash. I don't know much about Valve either but I do like some of their characters a lot more. That could be an isolated case though.
But yes, hats, costumes, skins, accessories, taunts, intro/victory/loss animations, and whatever else gives them a lot of good chances to sell items.
In other words I'm saying leave these types of games to the people who already make them.
Doesn't matter anyway because in the future all the other "gaming" consoles will go out of buisness and PC gaming will come to power then Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony will end up having to go through steam or develop on PC and we will get them anyway.
(I quoted gaming as IMO only Nintendo released a games console, Microsoft and Sony released media platforms)
Imo a game in the community's power is perfect for maximizing the potential in the gameplay. Air Dash Online was going to do this awhile back but it's been put on hiatus.
I hope you're right though, especially for Nintendo. They don't need to be making consoles anymore and would be doing way better if they just sold games, but that's a different conversation.
I would also love to see all the mods the Steam community can hurl at this type of game.
Even some of Nintendo's "games" aren't games, like Wii fit for example
Balance, however, depends on how hard they want to try and means a lot more. And even with patches I doubt they'll know what to fix and how much unless they pay attention to their community. I still feel though that if the game relies more on gimmicky speed and combos other than depth it will never live up to it's potential. But that's something that needs more videos or actual playing.
Mew2King and some other competitive players would be great additions to their team for balancing, since I guess Konami isn't doing it for whatever reason (although Sakurai doing the balancing again could just be trolls trying to scare me) I would personally love to help with it but even though I have the theory and whatnot down I lack experience.
And I wouldn't be worried about Ness, he's been in since 64. I'm just worried, as an ex Ness main trying to re-learn him in PM, that his general character playstyle may need to be altered a bit in order to make him a better character. It just doesn't "work" unfortunately. But I digress.
It has been confirmed that Nintendo wants Smash 4 in MLG, so that's a smart move on their behalf and a step in the right direction. Who knows?
Yeah, thats one problem with the Smash games, they always had characters which were apparently better than others, IMO Sheik is the best as nobody can ever hit me. (My friends yell as I get around the screen in 2 seconds)
Thats the problem with console gaming, the community and the developers seem alot more "detached" so to say. On Steam developers get tons of feedback that anybody can pile on to whilst consoles it seems only the reviewers get to speak for the crowd.
Here's a petition for it if you're interested.

I'm worried that they'll freak out like most other companies and over-nerf some characters. It's silly. Games are always gonna have characters better than the others but it should never be so blatant. Even people who tout the balance of Melee seem to forget that only the top 4 characters ever win anything big.
One of Sakurai's biggest complaints about making a large roster alongside just picking characters is the balance. It's almost like he's never heard of Street Fighter 4 or MvC3. They're not perfect of course but I blame Capcom for not patching anything.
shut up and take my money.
I too would enjoy this. Maybe they could have Jack of Blades from Fable.
They could call it "Xbox Xtreme".

There wouldn't be too many characters, so I guess I could understand. Once Microsoft gets more IPs though it could happen. Or if they pay different companies to put their characters in or something.
I'd still much prefer one made by Valve for the PC though. Mods, all the items and taunts you could buy (if it's F2P anyways), the ability to use any controller (even a Gamecube one!), and it could be put on other consoles later. I doubt a game like this for the XBox would ever make it to PC. The more platforms it's on the better imo.
