Is it inflation?
Why is fried chicken so expensive?

Currently Popeye's gives you 2 pieces (drumstick and wing) for $16. I remember in 2005 they gave you 2 pieces plus fries for $2 on Tuesdays.

It's not just Popeye's, KFC and other fried chicken places are charging these prices. Why so expensive?

That is expensive but going by those prices in 2005 it could be argued inflation. Most companies would change something to keep competitive in the UK.

Did you check the inflation rate through the years from 2005 to now?

Hi Hobbit XIII.

So why doesn't western governments take these restaurants like popeyes to court and charge them for being thieves?

Free market principles.

Economics outside of Communism and other regimes generally work on direct supply and demand.
The ancient question has yet to be solved although religions and philosophers have tried for thousands of years, how to satisfy and provide the unlimited wants of a person / society.

Example of Center Parcs in the UK they were scorned by the media for raising prices during School Holidays the response from them was that is basic economics when demand goes up prices will rise when the demand drops in theory prices with drop other wise they will price themselves out of the market.

Failing businesses who do not get a control of their prices throughout the chain of supply and to the customer often fail.
A panic sets in and they either price themselves too high and get less customers and bad reviews or they go too far in giving too much away and become unsustainable and when they try to correct this the changed can have an immediate despondent customer base if it is imposed on them without notice of why it is happening.

I'll add an industrious entrepreneur type of person may make a hot dog / chicken stand and undercut the local takeaways in your area. And that may affect the prices from those restaurants.

Why is fried chicken so expensive?...

Mostly, price-gouging and artificially inflated pricing, but all the way down the line. Covid and the lockdowns and greatly reduced patronage "reset" consumer pricing a lot higher as businesses tried to recoup losses on a per-unit basis...

And, during recovery, they were greatly encouraged to keep those prices higher - They discovered people were willing to pay at those prices.

If you're supplying chickens to Tyson/whoever and they're supplying chicken bits to KFC, what happens when KFC ain't selling chicken bits anymore? Tyson doesn't buy as much, you have a lot of left-over chickens and likely sell at a loss since the market is flooded. You reduce the number of chickens to try to control cost, then add on the losses to your prices to Tyson next year.

But, is demand really up compared to pre-Covid numbers? Dunno, by the numbers at least. Lowering production during Covid and recovery would naturally keep prices higher considering the capacity for supply.

Found this, which explains a bit in Oct '23 - https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/record-chicken-prices-squeeze-us-shoppers-benefit-tyson-foods-2023-10-05/

An article on what Retailers are doing, now, may help:

Supply and demand.

If the supply of chicken is low and the demand is high, you'll pay $16 for a 2-piece combo.

Stop demanding so much chicken if that's too expensive.
It isn't a supply and demand thing.

It's a greed thing.

Yes, this is inflation. But what is the cause, I do not know. I think their added value increased higher than inflation. Here for 8$ large meal :)

Two pieces of chicken for $16?! And one of them is a worthless meatless wing?! Good lord! $16 can get you a large meal at most fast food places here. But that's ALL it will get you, yeah prices are going up everywhere but two pieces for $16 is just madness, you need to do something about that.

stop buying it until they lower the price then

if they dont never buy it from them again

That's what SHOULD happen, but businesses these days seem to think the answer to all their problems is to cut staff to compensate for slowing business due to overpricing.
chicken is $3 a pound, legs are $1.75 a pound
so fair price about $6 max for just chicken alone
full meal add $1 coke, $2 for mash potato or something

total about $8 maybe $9

There is only one person you can blame for this and that is Alan Guth
Delta 6/mai./2024 às 9:25
It's because of inflation. Remember how expensive eggs became a few years ago? That was because of supply chain issues and the war in Ukraine.

How the hell would the war in Ukraine affect the egg supply chain in America?
raise gas prices so truckers cant ship eggs around cheaply

There is no way in hell they are charging you $16 for a fried chicken leg and wing. You're not being 100%. Assuming we're talking USD.
