I've no idea why they do it, they really bring people in great danger and wasting the cops time!
Think some cases is also because the person is a sore loser, I can see dumb kids doing it for some satisfaction.
OP, as people have already said, don't discuss your real name, location, town, school, or other identifying features, and use a VPN as an added security layer if you are really concerned. Beyond that, if some incident were to happen, just be cooperative with the police and don't make any sudden/stupid movements and the odds of you getting hurt are fairly low.
Short answer; Yes.
Keep your Ip private.
Don't post your adress or phone number.
Don't click on no unfamilar links, attachments, programs.
It's highly illegal and a waste of police time/resources. Even SWATTING behind VPN/Proxies can be traced over time as a pattern emerges, and most VPNs will have a log or give up the user's real IP or face being terminated themselves.
If the victim is under the age of 13, it's also breaking COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998) law to DOX (gather personal details) of them. Even before a SWAT attempt on them.
As to perform a SWAT: they would first need to know your ip address, to get your home address, then spoof your location to the police.
Hense on social networks: Don't show your Skype username (as that can easily be exploited into showing your IP) or personal details which could be used to create a DOX (Full name > Facebook > Phone > Address, etc).
Other way would be the malicious users posts/sends you a IP Snooper link, in which you click allowing your IP Address to be dump to their grabbing server, then redirects you to a valid website. If someone, for example, sends you a shorten url in chat, etc - use a unshorten url website and whois domain to check it (avoid clicking yourself).
A Youtube account itself can't be exploited into giving them these details, unless you leak it or link them (unknownly in social networks) yourself.
