does a gaming vpn exist and if so will it change my server ping?
i am looking forward to playing with some friends who live in russia but i want it to be a playable experience for the both of us. is there a vpn for gaming that can make my ping the same as anyone who is connected to the same server?

That's a myth. VPNs can't decrease your latency, but add even more of it.

As for bandwidth, you should look for a VPN with, well, higher bandwidth, and use Wireguard instead of OpenVPN. Avoid free VPNs. (Don't get me wrong, you don't need a VPN for gaming at all. Not the model/kind that just routes traffic, that is.)

Still, point 1 - your ping can't improve beyond your own Internet connection. You can improve both the latency and bandwidth (in some cases) by using ethernet instead of Wi-Fi if you're using it. The rest depends on your Internet plan, fiber availability, etc.

Could be wrong, and if I am I preemptively take the L on this.
Don't worry, you were on point.

I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

...I don't see why you would need a VPN to play with your friends in Russia. If anything, only reason you would need one in regards to gaming is to circumvent a b& or a region lock. Also, your ping IIRC is based on the distance between your location and the location of the server you're connecting to, as well as the overall quality of your connection. The more places you have to route your connection through, the worse it will be. Could be wrong, and if I am I preemptively take the L on this.

The latter part, not the former.

if you mean valve games, you can use a vpn in europe to get put on european servers that should probably be the case by default
For servers where you can actually choose them there is no point

the question was if i could get better ingame ping using a vpn, because my friends are in russia and i live in america, because ping changes depending on server. i just want to be able to play with them without god awful server lag
Fast ping is at direct odds with things like VPNs, proxies, anonymity, and location spoofing.

All of that stuff slows down your connection, which is what ping is all about.

You're not going to get faster speed from asking a server to perform extra steps for you - however, you might be able to find a server that throttles connections so that the faster players are brought down to the speed of the slower players. *lol*

Convince them to connect to a server hosted in America then, instead of you connecting to one hosted in Russia. Simplest improvement.

Well, thanks. Bit rusty when it comes to some of this tech stuff so I couldn't be certain.

Well, your question has been answered it would seem. Seems like a bad idea overall. Though, take it from someone who has had "friends" from Portugal, Lichtenstein, Singapore, South Africa and whatnot - you're probably better served playing something turn-based or not heavily ping-reliant.

Don't Starve Together, Board Game Online, turn-based strategy (I don't know of any that are multiplayer other than Ultimate Tic Tac Toe but...) basically anything turn-based or where you don't have to constantly have fast reaction times to survive - where it's not common for someone to be able to snipe you.

...or just play on an American server & let them deal with the latency issues instead of you. :P
