Does Steam work on 32-bit CPU computers?
I'm going to buy a new computer. A very, very cheap one. It has a 32-bit CPU. I thought Steam is also 32-bit, but... I don't know if it is in fact. I tried to make a virtual machine in VirtualBox. Installed Xubuntu 18.04.4 32-bit, installed Steam, and after I tried launching it, it showed this message:

Sorry, this computer's CPU is too old to run Steam. Steam requires at least an Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Opteron, with the following features: - x86-64 (AMD64) instruction set (Im in /proc/cpuinfo flags) - CMPXCHG16B instruction support (cx16 in /proc/cpuinfo flags) - SSE3 instruction support (pni in /proc/cpuinfo flags)

I tried checking the file in /proc/cpuinfo , it had flags cx16 and pni. But it hadn't lm flag. What does it mean? Aren't there any 32-bit version of Steam? Is 64-bit version the only one that works? If it is so... Then I need a 64-bit computer. Also, I don't know what other requirements for Steam are... I can't afford an expensive computer, I'll be satisfied with a cheap one and primitive games ^_^

Thank you for attention.

I'm sure you could find an old 32 bit version somewhere not officially tho. I don't see why you would buy a new computer with a 32 bit cpu anyway. I mean they ar so old where could you even buy a new one?
If you just wanna play old games then you should look into emulators.

As far as I know, Steam always forces updating its client to the newest one. So, isn't there any official 32 bit version? Is it discontinued?

I will not have any computers soon, so… there's nothing I could run emulators on :DDD

I'm going to buy a secondhand 32 bit computer (or 64, if Steam doesn't work on 32, I don't know. The price was the only thing I looked at…)

It states that it requires x86-64, which is 64 bit. I doubt there is a 32 bit version available. I would not buy a new computer that is 32 bit, even if it's cheap. Too much software now requires 64 bit.

Man if you got a choice don't buy a 32bit system, it's obsolete.

Steam client runs in 32 bit even in 64 bits machines, you can check it on the Task manager, the problem would be modern game compatibility

There is no guarantee that steam will work on 32 bit systems..

Well, such an interesting thing happened. I just used the same virtual drive with Xubuntu 18.04.4 32 bit, and launched it in a virtual machine with a 64-bit cpu, this time not with a 32-but cpu. And it works.

In other words, Steam still works in 32 bit systems, but in any case it requires a 64 bit CPU. I suppose so. It is quite interesting 🤔

Steam is only in 32 bit. They don't have a 64 bit version. They don't really need a 64 bit version. The games are going to be the main concern for people who aren't using 64 bit.

Then it is weird that Steam doesn't work with 32 bit cpus. Really weird.

just get a 64 bit computer, you can get a core 2 duo for about the price of a pentium 4, and get a lot more performance
