Not online, but still incredibly interesting, one of the first multiplayer video games was Tennis for Two (1958).

As for the first online multiplayer game, yeah it’s probably Quake Arena (1999)

Probably, it's the oldest game I could think of.

I kept remembering Red Alert 1 (1996) but that no longer has the online support I do believe.

The first counter srike was back in 1999 but only in beta. You know, CS is nearly 20 years old. Hope valve does something speical next year to celebrate 20 years of CS, the game that really made valve into a household name.

The oldest comercial title I can think of is Doom. Though BBS boards with online games similar to Nethack were already there for several years.

oh yes i forgot about half life 1 (played it 3 months ago and it has (almost dead) multiplayer. So Half life is oldest? btw are you sure that its the same ultima online now as it was in 1997?
