I'm having an issue with my mouse.
Despite the fact I keep my set up clean, it seems like dust keeps building up on my left and right mouse buttons, and makes large patches I need to scrub off. Is this normal, or is my set up not as clean as I thought?

Cheetos dust gets everywhere and will stick to anything.

It's not cheeto dust. Just normal dust that for some reason keeps coming back. Plus, I don't eat at my set up.

Your issue isn't with your mouse. Your issue is with dust. No matter how hard you try you won't get rid of dust.

Try rubbing the mouse buttons with Isopropyl Alcohol.

Dust doesn't stick, if you have to scrub it off it's something else. Whatever it may be, Isopropyl Alcohol can probably get rid of it permanently. That includes bacteria.

Alright, thanks for the tip.

You can get Isopropyl at any decent chemist, it's ordinarily used as an aftershave, an antiseptic and even a handwash. PC gamers use it because it's one of the most effective cleaners for electronic parts, it easily shifts tough stains like expired Thermal Paste.

Isopropyl alcohol may temporarily kill a majority of the bacteria currently on a surface. There is no know method to permanently kill all bacteria on a surface.

Using isopropyl alcohol on any plastic will cause premature damage to the surface of all plastics. The most recommended method of cleaning any device with electronics inside is to use a soft cotton cloth moistened with a a little water without any detergent or soap.

Winter + dry air +plastics + static electricity + sebaceous oils + dust = a dirty mouse.

Tossing it into the Sun would probably work.

You could also get good results by dropping it into a nuclear fusion reactor or vaporising it with a laser.

And you wouldn't have to leave the planet. That's win/win, mostly. Unless you were dying to take a summer vacation around the Sun. *shrug*

It's your hand - sweat, oils and grime.

Consider washing off some of the hands natural oil, using soap and towel dry, before using the mouse. If you have prolonged gaming seasons, take breaks inbetween, specially if the hand starts to sweat. The dust itself will just be attracted to a magnet from those oils/sweat on plastic.

According to the North Korean propaganda agency, visiting the Sun is easy. You just go at night when it's not hot or burning.
