How Loot Boxes could work in a non-F2P game
What if you took the Loot Box system of Star Wars Battlefront 2, but insead of paying real world money in a game you payed $60 for, you spend in-game currency on the Loot Boxes. For the In-game currency, don't need to spend IRL Cash to obtain, but rather earn them through various means in-game, as they become increaingly common, just like Gil from FInal Fantasy, or Gold Coins from various Mario Games.

Keeping that in mind, I have a video that at least somewhat explains how Loot Boxes are implemented in Star Wars Battlefront 2.

In-game currency = grind.
Devs don't want people spending too much time playing their game or they might realise it isn't worth it.

Dont worry, the in-game currency will start off somewhat plentiful.

Yeah but eventually they have to tighten the grip so that they aren't showered in it.

Why not just make the new Battlefront 2 free to play if it wants to use it's loot box system the way it does?

Good rpgs already did "loot boxes" correctly. They're called treasure chests and you find them, open them and you don't need to pay for them, sure sometimes you are required to grind through dungeons to get the good stuff, but these games usually made that process fun and in turn made it more rewarding.

Opening a chest and seeing a rare item in Diablo 2 was way more satisfying, compared to Quake Champions (the only game i've opened a loot box in) where unboxing a rare item gave me little to no satisfaction.

Loot boxes have just been popularized in all multiplayer First Person Shooters as of late, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Overwatch, Team Fortress 2, Battlefront, Counter Strike. I wouldn't expect not to see them in any new FPS game.

It's mainly about the aspect of gambling, always easy money to be made from gambling, though the main issue with Battlefront is that their loot crates drop these class items that rank from common to rare, they'll buff your classes when they're doing certain tasks. This means anyone who buys, say 20 crates on their first day of getting the game may be able to automatically outclass a player who has owned the game for a month and spent over 300 hours playing, just because they have rare class buffs equipped to their characters.

Though, all of this is just speculation and Battlefront has yet to add a purchase option to their loot crates, you can only buy them with in-game currency and earn them as a drop for doing well in a match?
