Touhou game series?

I just rented one today. ( Genso Wanderer )

Anyone else enjoy this series? I heard there are many fan games as well...

Genso Wanderer is one of the fangames.

If you want to try out one of the official bullet hell/danmaku games you can download them from http://www.moriyashrine.org/ for free, or if you want to support the developer you can buy some of the newer official touhou games from playism (you will still probably want an english translation patch though).

So...why was Genso ( fangame ) given a physical release but not the official titles? I guess they DO have a fan base but not a large one outside of Japan?

The touhou fanbase is pretty big both in japan and in the west but a lot of fans in the west don't actually play the games.

The fangames have an easier time getting physical releases here because they pick up a localisation team (such as NISA) and/or a publisher, whereas the official games are developed by ZUN who does not like the official games to be localised and sold commercially

you don't really need to understand the game anyways just to play, but the story is nice.

For Touhou-themed ARPGs, you can get Adventures of Scarlet Curiosity from moriyashrine.org It's based on the Ys games with some classic bullet hell elements as well. The OST makes it worth replaying at least once.

I've seen a ridiculously massive amount of fan art and porn of the series. Never played the games though.

Not really into Shmups, especially when they're as brutal as Touhou supposedly is.

Eh, on normal difficulty most of the games are actually quite approachable. It'll still take you a while to beat the game without using a continue but besides that, it's a learning curve just like in any other game.

and think that bullet hells are always as crazy as that 100% of the time, which is not the case.

There is that blog where you can download for free all main or spinoff games... I am especially fond of New Super Marisaland and the fighting games! Great series, this one. Shame they haven't opened up to western markets yet, really!
