How to stream my PC to the TV.
whats the best way to stream my PC to my TV over the LAN?

Followup question. Would it be somehow possible to also connect a gamepad via the LAN aswell?

My high spec PC is in a different room (on a differnt floor aswell), I also have a laptop I could connect to the TV but I have yet to find a wireless streaming service that offers 20-30+ fps.

is ur tv connected to your network? if its a modern tv it should be easy.. all i have to do is rightclick a movie and click on the 'stream to philips tv' and it will.. however it might also be possible to do streaming with bluetooth and you can just shuffle through your pc on your tv

What do you actually want to do? Stream movies/music? Play (steam) games? Does your TV have a network connector/wireless network or do you just have a "normal" tv and just want some devices video to appear there?

I'm guessing you want to run games on your PC, but use your TV as the monitor? It also sounds like you won't have the PC in the same room and want to use the gamepad as if it is connected to the PC for control of the game?

I am looking for a solution as well - want to take advantage of Big Picture on my TV (downstairs) via my PC (upstairs). My TV is not "smart"/networked. That being said the solution would have to be wireless.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. HDMI is pretty standard on TVs these days. How old is your TV?

for pure movies/music/internet
you could use a htpc for around $300-550

hp and moomoo like to put crap ram in their build, getting a 2x4g 1600+ kit will speed up the gpu alot

the a10 build will play games on mid settings @1080p (asus already put 1600 ram kit in it)

and a decent htpc keyboard /w touchpad

There is no way to stream video to a TV by the network cable. You will have to move your computer to where the TV is if you want to play Big Picture on the TV.

yes there is, but cannot use a hub or router, they need to be connected directly to eachother using 2 cables

....read the description and how it works...How is that any easier then running a single HDMI cabe? I've ran a single networking cable before, that was a pain, let alone 2 cables. O'h well. Learn something new every day. No matter how old I get, lol!

agreed, but 2 cat5/6 cables will be easier to run than a hdmi
1/2in hole vs 1in hole, unless you have a hdmi cable ends

there is also intels wireless graphics (WiDi), which sucks for anything beyond still images

about a $50 for the kit the tv and you get the crappiest setup available

You can. Its pretty simple to do when you understand how media streaming works.

I might do a tutorial on it at one point but for now I'll give you a few hints.

The Xbox and PS3 both have the capability to recieve DLNA streams, all you have to do is create a stream of your desktop for them to connect to. The answer here is VLC.

There is a latency though as VLC compresses and Xbox, PS3 (or in my case a raspberry pi and one of the new Intel NUCs) but if you fiddle with the screen resolution on your PC and the VLC settings its more than playable.

Then you just need a control input. I use an XBox controller with the wireless USB dongle thing and if I hang it over the edge of the landing onto the stairs it works fine.

Ill look into possibly doing a real tutorial at some point as if you fiddle with your router settings etc you can reduce the latency even more (either that or drag a network cable between your PC and Xbox but in that case why not just use a long HDMI)

Of course if you have a laptop or a TV that takes direct DLNA input even better
