Respect PCI.
Kids these days treat it like just for the video card, but please take a moment to reflect on all the other things you can do with PCI-e and older expansion bus standards.

Like if your motherboard doesn't do wifi and you have to move your system away from a RJ45 wall jack, or you accidentally got a mini ATX motherboard that doesn't have enough headers for the case front panel, or you need a SAS controller card because want to use a tape backup system to archive your files so you can be buried with your hentai collection and it'll stay readable until the sun consumes the Earth.

I choose motherboards by how many PCIe slots they have. I've got a Lite-On DVD burner running on a PCIe IDE controller.

I really like my current case, but the front panels use the old, notoriously flimsy 20 pin USB3 connector, and I don't think current motherboards have them. The best thing about this case is the tooless sliding hot swap slots for hard drives, but with SATA being supplanted by M.2, I'm looking at Icy Dock PCI card for easy swapping NVME sticks.

You never know if the FBI are going to raid you and you need to yank the OS and stick it up the butt or tape it under the toilet tank lid really quickly.

Hypothetically, of course.

If you're doing something illegal you already have made evidence that can get you convicted. Destruction of evidence is its own crime too.

just get a sata-pata adapter, good boards have 5-6+ sata ports, more than sata drives you would need, even if a few are disabled for m.2

Full disk encryption and yank the power cord - job done. They've yet to properly crack it as can be demonstrated by numerous cases where convictions have occurred based on data found: In each case the defendant either didn't encrypt it somewhere, had poor password management or handed over the keys.

Bonus points if you don't keep your encryption headers with the data, they can't unlock it at all without those.

That's not enough ports for me.

Hey, hey, hey. I may be young, but not that bad :D

i remember the days of manually assigning IRQ's because you added a new piece of hardware on a ISA slot and it causes IRQ conflicts , or setting pins on HD's and CDROM/writers on slave/master.

that's how you know you are old.

Last I checked, memorizing IRQ numbers was still part of A+ certification.

Master/Slave jumpers aren't politically correct anymore, though. Even if PATA devices are long gone.

IRQ is now all automatic with x2APIC, but PATA Cable Select is hit or miss.

VIA chipsets (predating first-gen APIC) I'm pretty sure had IRQ troubles. Lots of crashes due to conflicts.

pata master/slave was not that difficult
one drives set to master, the other to slave, or both to cs if using the 80pin cable with blue/black/gray connectors

but the ver old pata drives that you needed to set the head/cyl counts in bios to properly see the drive were a huge pain

I remember my first bios update, had to send off for it and it took 3 weeks to arrive in mail, we replaced bios chips, no flashing back then you had to really need an update to go through the hassle of getting one.

Almost forgot, we were able to add ram to some gpu's back then too, be great if that was still a thing today.

There's nothing to respect, it's an old standard that doesn't have feelings and got essentially phased out for a reason, it's obsolete.

Nowadays, motherboards come with more or less everything you need/want (I/O, good quality audio chip, good network adapters, etc.), unlike the "good old days" where you often had to use expansion cards to get everything you needed/wanted. That's a good thing, we don't need PCI expansion cards anymore, it's a technological improvement.

There's more to PCI-e than just video cards, you're forgetting about PCI-e SSDs, all of which are going to use up to 4 lanes each. So it's not like those lanes are going unused.

PCIe is  in my book.

When I see clunky connectors & ribbon cables then I'm looking for a pub.
