Major Computer Overhaul Need Some Advice!
Hello everyone!

I am looking into upgrading my AMD PC to an Intel PC. My goal is to change out the processor which will need a new motherboard, a CPU cooler, some new RAM, and a new case. My goal is to cut total cost to about $450 with minimal performance loss (willing to go to ~$500 but prefer to stay lower if possible).

Current Setup:
AMD FX-8120 @ 3.1GHz
Unknown motherboard
GTX 970 Strix Edition
12GB RAM
120GB SSD
1 TB HDD
Windows 10 x64

I have looked into an Intel i5-6600k based on its price and performance (apparently it can have up to 20% better performing than an Intel i5-4690k in games). I know very little about motherboards but I have seen the Asus Z170 PRO Gaming is well rated. When it comes to ram I was looking into Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4. I was also looking at the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO for a CPU cooler. Finally the case I was looking at is a Cooler Master HAF 912. Total cost of about $562. My main concern is the absolutely insane motherboard cost, is there a cheaper one that will work well?

Please make any reccomendations to shave some money off the total cost or better hardware.

Thanks for any help, I may be inactive as I am leaving town. Also, sorry for the excess use of parenthesis.

If you have Micro Center store nearby then you can get i5-6600K and MSI Z170A Gaming M5 motherboard bundle for $315. Store pick-up price only.

I would suggest changing the RAM to make it DDR4-3000 or DDR4-3200

You should also change the case, Cooler Master IMO makes poor quality towers, stick with Corsair, Fractal Design, etc.

Mobo is fine, but you can get it far cheaper on Newegg or some other site. Look for PCPartpicker for best prices, or stick with the Z170-A which is a bit cheaper.

What would I lose if I went with the A varient? Also for ram how is this? Also what is your opinion on the Corsair 100R?

Well darn, Steam's filters get rid of shortened links for security reasons, I'll have to use the messy multi-lined ones.

aim for better ram

speed / cl = value
140-150 = generic
160-180 = good
200 = better
200+ = best

you can get a good 2x8g kit from microcenter for $50-60

be sure to pick your store on the top

I surprised I have never heard of this place, I will definitely get some of that cheaper RAM.
