Will HDMI High Speed cable (HDMI 2.0) allow 4K @60hz on my 4k HDTV along with other resolution/refresh rate options?

Ok, I will try to keep this simple so bare with me here.

I have a gtx 970 and an i5 4690K CPU and they support High Speed HDMI or HDMI 2.0 for short.
So, currently I have a Samsung 4K UHDTV. It only supports HDMI ports in the back. There are no DVI, Display Ports or VGA. But the HDMI does support HDMI 2.0.

I am looking to upgrade my current HDMI cord as it is outdated. Here's what I want.

I want to play my games at resolutions and refresh rates at these options of my choosing if possible.

1080p@144hz
1440p@144hz or 120hz
4K@60hz

Would these three options be possible if I were to buy a High Speed HDMI cable and plug it in from my GTX 970 to my 4KTV?


(I am not sure if Valve/Steam has a policy where you cannot post links to certain store websites, but I am currently looking on Amazon and it is called "AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable, 6 Feet, 1-Pack")

Will this fit all my desires for what I am requesting above? Please, I am looking for help here and I really want to make sure this is all correct before I make any decisions.

Try the HDMI cable you have first and see if it will run your PC at 4k/60hz if so there is no need to buy into the HDMI 2.0 cable bs, the cables didn't change with 2.0 the ports did. Not saying all cables are created equal but a decent quality cable should have no issue.

Well, it seems that my TV did allow it after tweaking a setting, however I am not able to go higher than 60hz in any of the resolutions. I also seem to be getting some flickering and the screen goes black sometimes if its at 4K resolution. Does it mean its a bad cable?

If you are having issues with 4k/60hz than it could be a cable problem, but trying to go with a higher refresh rate at any res on any tv other that a few that will do 120hz @1080p will not work.

What TV are you using?

It's a Samsung 40" Class - LED - MU6290 Series - 2160p - Smart - 4K Ultra HD TV with HDR. The specifications say it will do Motion Rate 120.

So, are you saying I cannot do 1080p@120hz with an HDMI cable? What exactly can I do and not do then?

Ya, if you have flickering at 4k/60hz it's likely degeneration of your older HDMI cable. There is no need to go buy the most expensive HDMI 2.0 branded cable any decent one will do.

To be fair, a 970 isn't going to hit any of those goals unless you turn settings down alot anyway so I wouldn't worry to much.

As Feil says, you don't need an expensive cable,it's a waste of money, I use various £10ish ones off Amazon and they all work fine.

There is still lots of old games that can be played at 4k with a 970. When I first got my 4k monitor a long time ago with cf 290x's I played lots of older games at 4k with a single 290x, even played the HL series again at 4k to get the nice clean lines haha.

As simple as it sounds and as it was put to me by someone that knows a helluva lot more than me, a cable is a cable. All the hoopla and fake standards are merely marketing garbage. A $3 cable off Amazon is just as good as the $30 Monster cable you'll buy in the brick and mortar store.
